Dyno numbers 2012 Street glide CVO
« on: July 14, 2014, 10:44:04 PM »

I had a dyno run done and a quick look at the map to see if I was getting the power I should.   I have felt the engine was running hot.  I have seen oil temps as high as 280* on hot days, and wanted their dyno guy to look and see if it was running too lean.   I did not have the full dyno tune done just a quick look.   I have the standard CVO air cleaner, 4" Rineharts, Vance& Hines header, and the Harley street tuner.  Can I get better performance and a cooler running engine using the TTS?  Their dyno guy said he feel different cams and lifters with a full dyno tune will cool it off just fine.  I do not know enough to know if he is correct.  He seems like a pretty straight guy but I just want to ask.   I am thinking of putting a fan system on the oil cooler or upgrading to a better cooler,  probably one that has a built in fan system.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Was that tuned by Joe Lyon? Looks good to me. Do you like the way it runs? Do you have the AFR chart?

Your dyno looks almost identical to my 2011 with a similar setup. V&H tru dual headers and V&H hi outputs. Mine was 89 hp/108tq.

It always ran hot even with a good tune. I actually kept considering getting rid of the damn bike because it was miserable to ride in the summer.

Earlier this year I had hrdtail78 install GMR 577 cams and S&S lifters along with a tune. 99hp/115tq. Not super big gains (plus I added Reinhart 4" muffs) but boy oh boy does it run a LOT cooler.

I love this cam because it didn't kill the bottom too bad and gave it some legs in the rpm.

When it get "rich" headwork and throttle body are on the list to get the potential out of this cam.

Joe is good at his job. A cam swap will cool the engine down. Many cams out there . Don't get wound up in the internet BS. Let Joe at Rawhide help you in choosing the correct cam. He is the tuner, let him guide you.  Your engine is avg. I know other want to say that it should make X & X  you have a run of the mill avg CVO 110.  Congrats now time to fix it  :2vrolijk_21:

Yes it was Joe and he seems to know his stuff.  After reading comments about dealers I always ask around before I do anything.  Some times it is hard to tell when you are getting BS and the straight poop.  Joe went out of his way to explain everything to me and what he would suggest. I know just enough to be dangerous.  After talking to him,  joe is the type of guy I could trust.  He did not just want to sell me a different tuner, such as the TTS.   He did acknowledge the the TTS is a little more flexible but said I can achieve what I want with the Harley tuner.  Currently the AFR is not ideal.  I am cautious and just wanted to see where the bike was running and to get some ideas on what can be done to improve the bike.  I keep my bikes for a long time and put a fair amount of miles on them.  I not after the most HP I can get, I just want a powerful smooth riding bike.  I have had high HP bikes before but I do not ride like there is no tomorrow.   I like a bike that has great TQ and good HP that will last.  My last bike was had close to 50k on it and still ran great.  As I am closing in on the big 60 I thought it was time to get a nice Harley that had everything on it.  I plan on keeping it for a long time and am afraid that the heat is the only problem.  I am looking into putting a really good oil cooler on it to help cool it down along with a good tune.  It seems that different cams are also in my future from what Joe said.  I also am considering the Wards work cooling fans but only as a last resort.

Thanks for your input on Joe's talent.  I am looking for someone I can trust to guide me to what I want out of the bike without selling me a bunch of stuff.  I know that it will cost me to get what I want,  I just do not like getting to far out there and latter regretting it.  I am not looking for big numbers just great riding performance.

From the reading done here on this forum it appears the 255 cams generate the heat. If your not concerned about warranty issues take the tuners advice and swap out the cams and have the bike tuned properly. You can always add fans/different cooler later.

The bike just has the generic flash from the sepst for pipes.  Good looking bike and I liked his rider backrest setup made out of a passenger backrest.  Hope to see you in the future royalroadie.  Thanks for all the good comments guys.

I am thinking of putting a fan system on the oil cooler or upgrading to a better cooler,  probably one that has a built in fan system.  Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Check out the Big Sky oil cooler fans http://bigskyfan.tripod.com/id10.html.  Works great in stop-n-go/parade situations, easy to install, and great price.  I have these plus the Wards Part Werks cylinder head fans since I tour a lot in the summer heat plus tow a trailer.  If I knew then what I know now, and could only do one, it would be the oil cooler fans.  Just make sure you have room for them between the oil cooler and voltage regulator.
