Red light on speedo gauge
« on: July 16, 2014, 01:16:59 PM »

First off, I am no-where near my owners manual (300 miles away), or I would look it up.

During a ride today, I filled up with gas and travelled about 30 miles, and the red dot light on the speedo gauge face (up and slightly left of center), came on and stayed on until I shut down and restarted the bike. I travelled for about 120 miles before I was able to restart (didn't want to be stranded where I was). Didn't notice anything abnormal, no other lights, just that one.

Any ideas? I'm not overly concerned with it, just trying to figure out what it was.

Does your bike have cruise control?... Could you have inadvertently turned it on? :nixweiss:

Which bike are you talking about, the Ultra or the Breakout?  Different models have different layouts for the various warning lights.

According to the manual it's the electrical system lamp.

Flashing: The security system is armed.
Solid (security system armed): The alarm has been activated.
Solid (security system disarmed): First check all the motorcycle's lighting for a failed bulb and replace as required. If all bulbs are operating and the electrical system remains lit, see a Harley-Davidson dealer.

Try pushing the front brake lever away from you and see if the light goes out.  I have a similar issue and they are going to replace my brake master cylinder.  See if your brake light remains on when the red light comes on.  If so, that's it.

Bike (Breakout) has cruise, but that's an orange/green light lower and to the left. Thanks fot the thought though.

Sounds like a possible lighting issue, or the brake lever/light issue. I'll take a look.

Thanks for the leads!

A few weeks ago, my 2013 died when I was filling the gas tank. That round red light stayed on, but the bike was dead electrically. It had to be towed to dealer, they said something computer related fried, I can't remember that name of the part. It took a week for them to get one from HD and replace, under warranty.
