Anyone running a different tire on 2012 FLHXSE3
« on: July 24, 2014, 07:53:39 PM »

Guys, It's time for a tire change at almost 12K. No complaints with the stock ones but looking to make it even better if possible. Anybody out there have a suggestion as it seems they are a bit of an oddball size and hard to find. Thanks in advance!

Steve the only rear tire that meets the stock rear wheel load rating is the factory Dunlop. My rear lasted almost 20k. HD kinda has us by the jewels on this one.

Welcome.  There are several threads around here on this very subject Steve, but I'll save you the hassle of searching for them.  There is no acceptable alternative to the stock Harley branded Dunlop for the 18" rear tires on the CVO's.  The very few tires of similar size on the market were originally designed for sport bikes and thus have a much lower load rating than the Harley tire.  They were also designed to fit wider rims than the stock Harley 5.00" x 18 rim.

Just changed mine. Surdyke was $237.96 with free shipping. Seems like best price for the stock d407. Mine was at 13k and prolly could have made it to 15k if I wasn't leaving for a road trip in 2 weeks.

Thanks for the scoop and it doesn't surprise me at all. The rear is fine but the front starting to wear and make the hum when I corner so figured may as well do both and get it over with. My local guy is trying to get me the Dunlop American Elite, he changed out the front and said it rubbed ever so slightly but wasn't going to do the rear until he was sure the front was good so will let ya know the outcome but sure seems like a no go. Thanks again for the response.

That's the best price delivered I've seen yet.  :2vrolijk_21:

...and I'm the one that doesn't run my bike loaded like it is my truck therefore I run Avon's. Knowing what I do about load ratings, speed rating and the affects of heat cycles I don't feel I'm jeopardizing my safety one bit. It is funny how a tire from a few years ago was good enough for that touring bike and now it isn't BS. Just my opinion.....

Perhaps you need to find a more qualified "guy".  You're dealing with safety when buying or selling tires, and anyone in the business of selling and installing tires needs to be a lot more knowledgeable than just "trying it" to see if it will fit without rubbing.

The stock front Harley branded tire is a 130/60B19 61H btw, and there is an American Elite in that exact same size and load and speed ratings, Dunlop part number 31AE15.  If that isn't what he tried to install on the front, I can't imagine what he tried to install.  If you're not knowledgeable about tires yourself, take my advice and stick to the stock tires before letting someone just "try something".  And there is no 18" rear American Elite for him to "try".

As long as you're OK with it Mike that's all that matters.

I ride 2 up 85% of the time. Most of the time I have my tour pak on, loaded, and a saddlemen bag on top of my tour pak rack. If we go down my 3 kids lose both of us. I'm sticking with the correct tire.

Your right there. Do what you feel comfortable with.

There is a lot more to a tire than just a printed number on the side is all I'm saying.

I have had to do my homework on tires as hitting a corner at triple digits and having to trust just a small patch of tire to hold me was very unnerving at first.

I'm all about being safe and doing the right thing and like I said earlier if possible to make it better than fine but if not than it is what it is! I had no problems with stock and the only reason was looking for a change was to enhance a great riding machine. I appreciate the feedback!

I just finished searching the best deal on the stock Dunlops last week.  I couldn't find anyone offering a better price then Surdyke.

LOL. With track days you spend the entire day on the sides of the tire.. the middles are still good! Complete opposite of my Harley tires.  ;D
