Crate engine question
« on: July 27, 2014, 05:25:32 PM »

For those of you that swapped in a crate engine, are there any registration issues since the vins don't match anymore?  Were you required to report it to the DMV with the engine's MSO?  For some reason, I remember reading something a few years back about police at bike events.  They were going around looking for mismatched numbers and impounding bikes because they were suspected of part theft?

I only ask because I am going back and forth between building mine to 117 or buying a 124 for it.

I have heard of LEO's looking at large events like Sturgis, Daytona, etc.  When I had my 120R powered Road Glide, I kept a photo copy of my MSO for the case with my insurance papers just to be safe

May want to be careful with a 120R MSO. The MSO states that "This engine is for closed course competition, and NOT for HI-WAY USE" on PUBLIC ROADS. :o

There is no Federal or State reporting or tracking requirement for swaps of non-VIN matching engines; at least not in the US.  There are in other countries.  It's no different for cars or bikes here.  If you have an engine swapped out in your car you get in it and drive away.  Same for bikes.

Law enforcement checking ID numbers on engine and transmissions are comparing those against records of stolen parts or parts from stolen bikes.  So they're not checking for a match between the engine serial ID and your bike but are instead checking for a match between the engine/trans serial ID and databases of things stolen.

I did a 120r and called AAA and they told me what i had to get signed by the dealer (which they had already done because they knew and I could of asked them) then made a appointment at CA DMV (one of the worst/rudest places on planet earth) and it ended up only taking a total of 15 minutes from the time I walked in. Very simple and also did not change any of my insurance rates which I was worried about after I dropped it in because I hadn't thought about that when I decided to move forward.
Doing that motor was the greatest thing ever for me. I have about 12000 mies on it now and still love it every ride. For me their is no substitute for "inches". Yea, I know...

When the numbers don't match it's an indicator that it might be stolen, Twolanerider is right... the VIN will be compared against those that have been reported.

Even if they suspect that the theft was not reported yet, the second "clue" is when the person in possession of the property knows very little about it.

The bike could be seized for further investigation based on probable cause, or in Canada we call it reasonable grounds, but someone who stole the motor is not going to know the particulars about it.

If you pay 5k for an engine I'm confident that you would be able to answer anything that was thrown at you.

Most cops wouldn't know where to find the VIN let alone know how to read it, so I wouldn't worry about it too much, the time I could see a real possibility of an issue is if you cross the border between Canada and USA and the motor still looks fairly new. Those folks have a lot of authority and their search and seizure powers are far more significant than the police.

If it was me and I were crossing the border under those circumstances, I'd bring along a copy of the bill of sale for the motor.

Wonderful invention, copy machines.  You can even scan the MSO and bill of sale and print it out in full color if you prefer, or shrink it to make it easier to fold and place in your wallet.  I can't think of any good reason not to do this and then you will be prepared for that one in a million occasion when someone notices and asks about the different VIN's.  Keep the originals in a safe place btw.

Thanks for the replies everyone.  Keeping a copy of the MSO would probably be more than enough for me.  I'm not much for the big crowds like sturgis and myrtle beach.  I do go to outer banks bike week, but my bike is never out of my sight for very long.

Not sure how I'll be in 2 years when I retire and move back to the KC area, but I can't imagine I would change much.  Not sure if they even have events there as I've been gone for 19 years.

So I guess my next question is:

What are y'all doing with you stock engines?  Sell it for a couple K or storing them?  I guess I could build a case for it and display it in the garage.  Just seems like it would be a PITA to sell it.

Chris

I'd be willing to bet there are plenty of guys riding around with a TC96 who don't follow the forums and thus aren't familiar with the multitude of negatives surrounding the CVO110.  Find one of those guys and I'd guess you could sell yours to them for at least $3k.  The only problem I would personally have with that scenario is I have a very hard time selling something to someone else without fully disclosing all the faults I'm aware of.  If I were a used car salesman I would have starved to death a long time ago.

The guy I sold my 110 to owns a restaurant we go to regularly and he absolutely loves it. Saw him last week and he went on and on about how much he loves it and has put almost 10,000 miles on it without a issue. just saying..
