Little vacation to Vegas
« on: December 12, 2006, 09:56:46 PM »

Rented a bike at Las Vegas Harley on friday morning. 24 hours and 593 miles later I had a blast. Rode first north on Int 15 to Zion National Park in Utah. Then proceeded east toward the Vermillion Cliffs. Made a huge loop around the cliffs and back to Fredonia. Then started back towars Vegas. Got to Overton and decided to make the loop to the Valley of Fire. By then it was getting dark and you could not see your hand in front of your face. Kind of docile running in the middle of nowhere not another vehicle to be found. Then proceeded back to the city. None of my pics turned out while riding down Las Vegas Blvd. oh well.

Sat morning at 4am left Paris hotel for Hoover Dam. Got down to the check point and made a U turn. The police did not think this was funny [smiley=nixweiss.gif] Told the officer at an overlook that it was too dark to see the dam so I rode back to this overlook to wait till the sun comes up. 20 minutes later and a almost strip search later the nice officers let me go. I had to get the bike back to the Harley shop by 10 am so no time to take the tour. My loss.

The cost of the bike which was a street glide was only $180 for 24 hours. Did go through 4 tanks of fuel at an average of $2.69 a gallon. If I had of researched the trip more I would have rented the bike for 3 days and made the trip to the Grand Canyon [smiley=oops.gif] Next time [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]
This is a pic of Virgin River Canyon on the way to Zion National Park

Brian, you just rode some of my favorite country.  Glad you enjoyed it so much.  You did good stuff and covered good miles getting to see them.  Did you get a chance to do Red Rock Canyon right in Vegas' backyard?  It's "smaller" than much of the wide vistas you experienced.  But for close and easy to get to it's still worth seeing.  You can even hike through the area if you've a mind too.  Lots of old westerns used to get made there too.

Nice little jaunt and thanks for sharing. We did a little trip outta Vegas a couple of years ago and ended up going through Kingman, down Rt. 66 to Laughlin and back to the strip. Your excursion looks nicer. Hoover was a disappointment I thought. BIG but didn't want to take the time for a tour. Security was serious then too.
One of the best parts of the whole deal was stopping in AZ to lose the lids and met a like minded couple. Spent the whole day w/ them and had a blast. You meet the nicest people on a Harley.  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Brian,
Great pictures and ride report. Looks like you had a good time, good riding, and got to see some great sites.

I wanted to make that trip also. The sun didn't rise as early as I thought so I didn't have enough time to make that circle. Got to the Dam around 5 am, waited for sunrise around 7 am, took pics till 8 am, had to have the bike back by 10 am. Like I said next time I will get the bike for longer or "brain fart here" when Kathy and I make our south west trip to see Big B we will take the time to see more things [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Don, I have been studying the maps I have on the area and can not find Red Rock Canon [smiley=nixweiss.gif] Does it go by another name, or is it part of the Desert National Wildlife Range?
Let me know and I will definately see it next time I am there [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

When you live on the coast like I do anything over about 50 feet high is a moutain. Just kidding [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]
So in Montana there must be alot of buttes. Can't wait for Nelson to see some of them on the ride out west.  [smiley=oops.gif] got off track there alittle.

It's a BLM managed site Brian.  Not big at all.  Can be hiked in a an afternoon.  Something like a 13 miles ride or walk if memory serves me correctly.  Just a small quicky bit of what to me is beautiful in that part of the country.  It's one of those things you do from Vegas if you really don't have time to really go see anything else as it's only 20 minutes or so from the strip.

Just found a BLM link to the place.  Probably everything one would ever need to know short of actually seeing it.
