OK, I'm swapping Lifters, Need Help!!!
« on: August 03, 2014, 06:29:14 PM »

Last week I was taking my Son for a ride on my scoot and noticed a lag in throttle response when I got on it and an occasional pop. After talking with 103tHunDer and reading these threads I decided to go with a new set of lifters. I'm thinking of going with S&S lifters and Screamin Eagle quickie adjustable push rods. I'm stock right now and want to know which lifters I need and where is the best place to buy them. I plan on bringing it in next week and have them check it under Extended warranty. I want to look at cams and lifters before they install incase I want to go with a new cam. If I need cams, what do you suggest? I currently have 15,000 miles with the TTS tuner, baffles and headers from Fullsac with download for a CVO 12 Ultra that has been fine. Thanks in advance and God Bless!!! :2vrolijk_21:

Are you happy with stock?
Why adjustable push rods? (Are you going to do mods later)
Are you wanting to fix issues like lifters, inner cam bearing, tuning, heat etc?
Just a couple of question to get things started.. Good luck!!

I am satisfied with the way the bike was running. I will do cams if needed and of course bearings too. Adjustable pushrods were just incase cmas are good and I decide to do cams down the road. :nixweiss:

Okay, so you are happy with your bike the way it is now...
So you have a popping noise going on and you are taking to dealership for warranty work..
Find out what it is, as long as you have a warranty, go with se adjustable pushrods and se lifters,
The 255 cams are great for a stock 110,
No warranty!!! Go with the best!!!
Just my 2 cents,

For what its worth, I would use S&S lifters and their adjustable quickie pushrods. Pushrods simplify the install and if you decide to make changes later they will be there waiting for you

consider changing out the cam bearing while you're in there.  They have been know to fail

Why adjustable push rods? (Are you going to do mods later)

From what I understand if you're NOT taking off the heads, you snip the stock pushrods and then use adjustable pushrods for the reinstall part.

I've not done this on my Twin Cam, but is this not correct?

You do not have to pull heads - only the rocker boxes to remove / install pushrods if you use the stock non-adjustables.  If having a shop do it the extra labor to pull the rocker boxes is about a wash with the price of the adjustable pushrods - they are not cheap!  I had S&S premium lifters and SE inner cam bearings put in my '07 recently and just re-used the stock pushrods.  This motor is fairly new with only 8k on it and the bike had just gone out of its ESP coverage so I am trying to be pro-active and guard against another lifter / cam bearing failure which is what took out the previous motor.

Actually, you need to remove the gas tank, rocker box cover and rocker arm assembly to remove/replace the stock non adjustable pushrods.  But you are correct in that if you don't wish to do this work, you simply snip the stock pushrods and install adjustable pushrods in their place...  Of course, then you also have to correctly position your cams and then correctly adjust the adjustable pushrods versus simply installing the stock pushrods and not dealing with their adjustment.  All kinds of trade-off depending on the skill level of the installer..

Okay, I was close.  In my mind I saw the tank and everything coming off to get to the pushrod holes.

If I were doing this to my '09 SERG, I would do just that, snip and throw away.  I would not like to pull the tank and rocker box covers unless I was doing head work etc.

Also with all the tips about extra preload on the lifters as many of the builders have recommended to help with the noise a bit, that is NOT an option when you retain the stock pushrods.

With the adjustable pushrods from S&S, do you get new pushrod tubes?  I thought I read somewhere that you did, but not sure.

I'm still thinking about doing lifters on my '09 just see if I can quiet things done a bit more.  On my '09 I don't believe I have the newer problem child lifters, but it can't hurt this winter to do the swap.

I'd suggest using the SE tapered pushrods...everything you need comes with them, covers, o'rings and all.

When it comes to valve-train related components, we reach for the S&S brand. :)
