Some years ago, I purchased one that failed immediately.  Got a second one via the warranty, which failed shortly after the warranty expired. (This was back when all the device did was read temperature, not also indicate fill level).  That was enough for me...

After the second failure I installed a dash mounted oil temperature gage, which works to this day...   :2vrolijk_21:

Had one in my 2011 for three years mostly out of curiosity of what temp I was running.  Dealer threw it in with original purchase.  Never really payed it much attention until it got up near 300 degrees once in a summer traffic jam and made me glad I was running synthetic oil.  Already knew engine was pretty hot as it was roasting my legs.  About a year after I got it the oil level display quit working but temperature seemed pretty accurate until I switched back to the stock dipstick just because the markings on the stick were easier to read.  If someone made a nice looking analog with good readable oil level stick I'd probably still use one.

The only reason I got one was because I lost my dipstick and the dealer only carried this stick.
Same reason for getting the 2nd one.

The one on the "09 had water in it at less than a year. The sweet and smokin' hot service writer at Paradise H-D in Tiger, OR called my Dealer to verify that it was less than a year old, and she even put it in for me :2vrolijk_21:

You might want to just go ahead and order the standard model now, or you might be buying number three in the near future, followed by number four, etc.  Obviously the dealer isn't going to stock the cheap one if he can keep selling you the expensive POS.

Well said Greg.  Let's see if they can step up on their quality claims.

The one I was using only lasted about 18 months.  Then for no apparent reason started showing a message, "no sensor" or something like that.

While I do like to monitor the oil temp, I'm not inclined to invest in another one if they don't last any longer than indicated in the comments above.

I am looking for one to replace the air temp gage, if possible.  I've seen some on the web, but I don't believe they have the red lighting for night use.

Best,
Ken

I've had three of these fail so here is what I wrote to them on their site.  Let's see if I get a response!

Hello,

I am most amused by your quality claims.  I've had three of your oil dipsticks in my Harley motorcycles and none lasted more than a few months.  Harley only warrants them for three months.  I also help moderate a website called "cvoharley.com" with over well over 12,000 users.  There are many dissatisfied customers on our site.  Here is just one of many examples:  http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=96440.0;topicseen     I invite you to stand behind your products, join our website and help the many customers like me who have your failed product.  I assure you that people who read out forum do not use your product.

Reply from GasLock:

Greg,
Of course we are staying behind our products and trying to help customers who have problems with it.
In such cases we offer a repair, if the product is not older than 18 months.
Our products have laser marked identification numbers and production dates.
The dispsticks have their laser marking at the threaded plastic body.

Customers from overseas may be faced with high shipping cost when sending the product to Germany. So it may be a good idea, if you can help those customers to get 3-5 customers together for a collected shipment.

Gaslock pays freight cost when sending the repaired parts back.

Let me know if you have any further question.

Best regards.

I guess I'm just not in touch completely with the modern world.  Plain old dipsticks have been doing a more than adequate job in all sorts of engines and transmissions and industrial gearboxes and lord knows what else, for more than a century.  I have yet to find a compelling reason to abandon a foolproof and simple solution and replace it with an overpriced electronic POS.  I've asked this question many times in the past when folks talk about oil temps, but I've yet to get a decent answer.  What do you intend to do if you press that button and the number that comes up is higher than what you've convinced yourself is an acceptable oil temperature?  Are you going to immediately shut the engine down, regardless of where you are at the time, and stand around with your thumb up your --- for a few hours until it cools down?  And what exactly is that "magic" oil temperature where you push the panic button?  As for the really super duper dipsticks that also tell you the oil level (sort of), how friggin' lazy are big bad bikers becoming for Pete's sake?  Afraid to get a drop of motor oil on your shiny boots if you use the manual dipstick?  Sheesh!

Jerry ;)

Looks like your button is still workin' Jerry!  Motorcycle geeks are like every other kind of geek, if it has a digital readout they gotta have it.

;D    Yup, and that's what the marketing folks count on.  We've been trained over the past sixty years to never be satisfied with what we have, but to always want the newer shinier gadget.  When I was a youngster it was always "needing" a new car every year, and buying it on introduction day.  God forbid you weren't the first on your block to have a shiny new car in the driveway.  These days it seems to be more about electronic gadgets, thus we have folks camping out on sidewalks to be first in line when the Apple store starts selling the latest phone.  Not a damned thing wrong with the one they already have that's about six months old, but they just can't be cool unless they waste a day or two and a pile of money (that many of them don't really have) on the newest one.  And let's not talk about the fact that the overpriced Apple products aren't as good as some of the competition.  Anyone who has owned a Harley knows that price doesn't have a thing to do with being the "best".

OK, I'll try to retire the soapbox for the rest of the day.  It will be tough, but I'll try.

I have gone thru 3 in the last 28 months as well but my dealer has warrantied them all. I know they are a gimmick but I will say I like being able to have a point of reference (though when I switched out my last one there was a 15 degree difference in temp reading) on the different temps under different circumstances. More of a curious deal than a worried about the temp deal for me. Just another button to push at a stoplight..

Mine came with my 08 SERK when I bough tIt in Feb ( 2014). It worked for awhile then failed. I replaced the battery, It worked for a few months, then I got the temp but no sensor. the display had alot of moisture in it, now oil, so its pretty much done.

guess Ill order a stock one.

Does anyone know of an analogue unit?  It doesn't matter to me whether it is digital or not.

I can check my oil level anytime, but the temperature is very important, especially on very hot days.
As an engineer, guess I am sort of a geek and proud of it.  Still, the unit need not be digital to be of use.
