Direct reading oil temperature gage
« on: August 07, 2014, 07:53:26 PM »

Any one found a direct reading oil temperature gage to install in the air temperature position. Preferably one that has the red lights to match the other gages? Contact me if you have found one.
Thanks

I put this one in my dash. http://www.harley-davidson.com/store/oil-temperature-gauge---fahrenheit

It came with a blue light but I just switched it with the red one from my air temp gauge.

That looks great, but the face looks darker than the brushed aluminum on my 07 CVO Ultra.  I've seen them with the same look, but they did not have the same lighting.  From what you said, the lights can be changed?  That's good news.  Do you happen to know what bulb is used?  I plan to check with the vendor in advance regarding the lighting.

I may still keep the one on the dipstick, in order to see if they agree or not.   :coolblue:

I did this install on my 07 FLHTCUSE2 back in 2008. It fits and works perfectly. I find it much more useful than the old air gauge.

The oil temp gauge is almost a 99% perfect match to the other gauges. The needle is slightly different and the needle stop pins are absent. You would never notice the difference unless you were looking for it.

There was a slew of guys doing this on the forums years ago and that is where I first learned of the swap.

The temperature indicated from this gauge differs greatly from the digital dipstick reading of the oil temp. The different locations of the two sensors is obviously the cause.

I am using the Baker +1 pan and the sensor is located in the oil supply port to the oil pump inlet.

The problem is that the spun aluminum gauge has been out of production for awhile, so you can't order that one to match the earlier model CVO's.  I think all they offer these days is the black, white, or titanium faces.

You could always look on places like ebay if you need the spun aluminum version.

I tried like hell to get the spun alum one but could not find it,ebay incl. then somone on here told me about a gel filled one that goes into the dipstick hole and also acts as a dip stick.Real nice quality easy install. I will try to find paper work and name of company.

The gauge is an analog type that is oil filled and works well.Only thing is you have to lean over to see it in the dipstick hole.Better than the digital on from Harley that broke twice  POS. JESCustomAccents is the name of the company that makes the one I use.Maybe you would like it.

Does the gauge in the dash read higher or lower?

If we can safely assume that both gauges were calibrated to read the same at the normal temperature range of 230 - 250°F, you would expect the dash mounted gauge to read slightly lower than the dipstick.  The reason has to do with where each unit measures the oil temp.  The sending unit for the in dash gauge is located where the oil is leaving the oil pan on it's way back to the oil pump, whereas the dipstick is picking up hotter oil before it makes it's way through the pan over to the pickup.

What's important isn't the exact reading, but the variation from what you have observed to be the norm for your bike.  You're not baking a cake where exact temp and time are critical to the result.  Lets say you have determined that your particular bike and gauge shows your average oil temperature stabilizes at about 230° with an ambient temp in the 70's, and rises proportionately as ambient temps rise.  If you see a sudden change from what has been the norm for your particular bike and gauge, then you have reason to investigate.  Otherwise, find something more important to fixate on and worry about, like that 18 wheeler trying to share your lane.

Jerry, well said interpretation of the use of a direct reading oil temp gage. It's what I used in my race car an my airplane. Example,  during a race a rock went through my radiator, My water temp gage had stuck at 190 degrees an I compared the temperature oil temperature rising higher than what I normally observed I pulled off the track an discovered the real problem, I saved an expensive engine. I use the same on my airplane. I've never had to do an emergency landing, thank the Lord.

Mitch,

I believe I have the correct temp gauge for your bike new in the box.  I'm not home right now to check the PN, but I'm pretty sure it's the correct part for your bike.  PM me if you're interested.  It doesn't match the faces on the new bike, so I have no use for it.
