Milky Oil?
« on: August 13, 2014, 08:00:01 PM »

so to just give a quick brief,
I bought the bike about 4 weeks ago
I haven't rode the bike because I was working and taking the new riders course and working on getting my license.
the dealer charged me for "full inspection" which I believed to me everything to make sure it was sound! including a oil change.
but this evening i did my own inspection and the oil on the dip stick is "Milky"
on my hot rod builds, that's not aways good,
so signs of water but I'm going tomorrow and buying a new filter and oil and changing it myself,
starting and letting it run for a few minutes with hopes it looks better?

this is not normal right?
2001 FXDWG2 Switchblade with 29,700 miles

my real wish is to get it to the my HD dealer here and having them do the 30,000 mile full inspection

Obviously no internal water leak on the 2001 bike.  If a bike sits for stretches and only gets very short or idling runs it'll sometimes lead to enough condensed moisture internally to make the oil look a little milky.  Hope that's it as the scarier consideration is you bought a bike that had been underwater sometime...  ???

it stays on a battery tender

but still changing the oil and filters today!
just to ease the mind a little more

thanks for the info and easing the ole mind

and starting this week end it's getting some good mile on her,

Not much benefit to the engine to run it for a short period of time, but if this condensation it will pretty much take care of itself when you ride it and get the engine hot.

another $150 spent but well worth it

changed that "Milk and filter" out last night along with plugs, wires
and saved it all!

and damn the crap that came out of that poor motor scares me,
I saved it and might send it back to the dealer that did that "100 point" inspection, or was that "1 point" inspection? it started

Now
I ran the bike for a while, watched, listened and checked and all looked good but really need to get it out and running for awhile and let the 20/50 synthetic get up in those cylinders and rings good

I was a little confused about the plug gap - 38? (01 Switchblade)

they gave me the newer Screaming Eagle plugs (a sharp point?)and the ones that came out of it where more of the conventional type?

If you started it repetetly without getting the engine up to temperature you may have caused it yourself. Ofcourse once or twice would not do it.  I know someone that got a new four stroke snowmobile and he thought it sounded so cool so he wanted to hear it a lot. Needles to say his oil was very milky as well.

Rule number 1:  NEVER trust a HD Dealer to do what they say they will do, or have done.  In 4 weeks, the oil would not get milky unless you went out and started it every day for 5 minutes, and even then I don't think so...

I'm not saying that all HD Dealers are bad, but there are a good number of them that I wouldn't trust to change a spark plug, or anything else.  Since you obviously have some wrenching ability, just find you a shop manual for your bike and do it all yourself...at least you can only blame yourself then   ;)

Or, if you don't want to fool with it, talk around to other HD owners in your area and find a good independent shop...there are plenty that would love to work on that bike.

As far as the plugs?  The stock ones work just fine, but since you have already bought the "SE" plugs, use 'em.  I'm not sure about the gap, but 38 doesn't sound unreasonable.

It takes a good 20-30 minutes of riding to get everything up to proper operating temps so that any condensation in the oil will boil off.  You're better off just not riding instead of cranking the bike and letting it idle, even for long periods of time...which is not good for an air cooled engine anyway.

A good rule of thumb is to avoid starting a bike (or any other internal combustion engine for that matter) unless you intend to ride it long enough to get the oil up to full operating temperature.  In normal riding conditions you're probably talking at least ten miles; in cold weather it will take much more.

A lot of folks still think going out to the cold garage in the winter, starting the bike, and letting it run for a few minutes is somehow good for the engine.  It is one of the worst things you can do.

yep heard the same thing, Now!
about starting so this evening when I got home I cleaned finally and ran the bike for about 20 or 30 minutes getting it good and hot
so hopefully the inexperience of my few starts since I've got it did not do any damage?

not a HD dealer,
Arlington Motorcycle Traders

I use San Jacinto Harley Davidson for my go to dealer and they have been a big help

will keep you all posted on Milk if there is cookies involved or just 88 cubic inches of per Harley still there
"fingers crossed"

This might be far fetched and way out there but could it possibly be that someone put milk in there?  :nervous:

Probably far fetched, however a friend was having intermittent running problems on his bike for a bit and after diagnosing the problem as fuel related, we pulled the tank and discovered a feuding sister had put Cat litter in the tank. A locking fuel cap ensued after the clean out.
