Oil Temps
« on: August 14, 2014, 08:34:03 AM »

What are you guys seeing? I have a 2014 CVO, 24D cams, V&H PD headpipe, Crusher  Mellows, SESPT dealer tune. The dipstick gauge shows 240°-245°F, maybe these dipstick gauges are not accurate.  :nixweiss:

Even in high ambient temps, you shouldn't see temps that high.  I'd check your dipstick against a known good source.  Odds are your gage is inaccurate...

I disagree.  230F - 250°F is the normal range you should expect with a Twin Cam engine unless you've added extra oil cooling capacity beyond what came stock.

If you don't believe the gauge, it is very easy to use a pan of boiling water and a known good thermometer to check the dipstick.

What oil temperature were you expecting, and why?

It's the lean fuel fuel injection.  EVA . Aftermarket products are available that run richer and make motor cooler. My S & V 111
Max temp is 185 after running 300 miles in 95 degrees day

Is that an EVO motor or twin cam?? That might make a difference. :nixweiss:

I don't think my water cooled bikes run that cool at that temp

Oil can't do it's job effectively if it's got air in it or if it doesn't get up to at least the temperature to boil water (condensation) off. If it doesnt get hot enough to get into all the small crevices and holes around needle bearings etc., and burn off the water that condenses and that forms acids and rust etc, it's not working to the best of it's ability. If were talking 95 degrees ambient temps, your temps sound pretty much perfect to me IMO.

"What oil temperature were you expecting, and why?

Jerry"

My '04 RG 113" reads 200°-215°F, with less compression I figured the 110" would be a little cooler.

Independent_1, readings are at ambiebt temps of 85°-95°F. I'm not concerned at this point as this 110" is very quiet- mechanically. So far.

I run most of the time 225-230. Once 5 days straight at 105f running 75 all day stayed at 250-255. I am fine with that on a 131 with an oil cooler with fan and a fan behind my horn.

The reason for the 240-250 temps could be your "dealer tune"!!!! I'd take the bike to an independent that has a good rep, and them retune the bike. Every dealer tune I've ever witnessed was still very lean.
My carbed T124 runs at 190 on 95-100 degree days. The hottest I've ever seen is 235 idling in traffic for 30 minutes.
I don't believe for a minute that "air cooled engines" can run efficiently or cool at AFR's of 14.6.
The Harleys I've seen running best have afr's of 13.5/1 under cruise and 13/1 under load. jm2cw Buffalo

I would see temps as hot as 285 in heavy traffic on hot 90*+ days.  Normal for me is 235* on hot days going down the highway.  I just installed a ultra cool oil cooler and have seen a nice improvement of 20-25* reductions.  I have a dyno tune with a TTS ll scheduled for a week from tomorrow and hope this will get it down more during hot weather in traffic.  I have been watching and taking notes of ambient temp and oil temps and will report back after I have collected more data. I am currently running a 2012 SG CVO with V&H duals headers and Rinehart 4" mufflers.  The previous owner had someone install the SE tuner but it is not working very well.  My mileage is poor,  32 in town, 38 on the highway.  I hear a lot  of guys getting getting much better mileage from their bikes in the range of 38 in town 42-45 on the highway.  I do not believe the canned map for my current tuner is working like it should.

Right on, as the thermal piston jets pull heat into the oil from the bottom side of the piston in T/C's.

Just finished Sturgis run with stock CVO 2013 pipes and a tune only changes. never saw over 255° which I am satisfied with. Also averaged 48mpg bucking wind, 150 lbs payload+ me (225), and riding 70-80 mph most of the time.
