103 engine Better than a 110
« on: August 19, 2014, 12:14:04 PM »

Is it really true that a 103 engine will run longer with out giving trouble and a better engine then the 110 .  Ever one I talked to that has a 103 don't have all the  problems we have with the 110's and seem to get a lot more miles out of there motors before they break down .

Isn't the 05 a stroked motor? if so I have to agree with it being better than the 110. I had the 06 and I swear it ran like a champ.

Well I will throw in my 2 cents worth on this one! I had a 2012 103 that clanged and banged and pinged, ran extremely hot and was a gutless wonder! I thought I had gotten a diesel engine! But it did run 13,000 miles without breaking down before I traded it for my 13 110 CVO. The 110 runs quieter, cooler, faster and stronger than the 103 ever did and at 22,000 miles still no breakdowns.

If it was a 2012, it was a stock 103, not a CVO 103. The CVO 103 (2004-2006), was stroked, had cams, Screamin' Eagle heads, and a hotter download.

well I have both, my softail fatboy 103 has been awesome never let me down but my cvo 110 street glide is in the shop already and I realize the softail is lighter but my softail will absolutely destroy my cvo street glide, way smoother and cooler, no comparison

I had a 2007 FLTR with a 96ci that I had converted to a 103ci, high compression pistons, SE255 CAM and tuned. That was a really sweet solid ride. On the other hand, I like my 110 now, it has 55k miles and has been worked on a number of times. Great power but do worry from time to time.

Rode my wife's 14 year old 80 cubic inch FXR/EVO today...  Original everything in the motor, including lifters.  Completely quiet valve train, idle's like a purring kitten.  Accelerates nicely, relaxing to ride without listening to every clink and clatter, completely fun to ride.

Now if I could only find a seat for it with a rider's backrest...  My lower back needs a backrest!   ::)

If it was a 2012, it was a stock 103, not a CVO 103. The CVO 103 (2004-2006), was stroked, had cams, Screamin' Eagle heads, and a hotter download.

Not trying to be a jerk, but for the sake of clarity on the 2006 CVO 103 (I had one just like yours...wish I had kept it!)...the cams were considered pretty crappy and blamed on EPA standards.  Popular replacements were from Zippers or Freedom if you were not going to do some headwork.  The heads were not the Screamin' Eagle high perf. ones, but instead were hemispherical in shape and not considered very good without increasing compression.  Not sure what you consider a "hotter" download either...any Stage I,II, III, etc change involved new computer flash or better yet, a custom dyno tune.

They did seem to run good, though.  My 103 at Stage I ran even with my buddy's Stage I 110.  However, another guy had a 95 in. that was built up with heads, cam, etc. and would eat our sack lunch any way we tried!

Ride On!

About the same as my experience between my 04 SEEG, 103 CI and my 10 SESG, 110 CI.  The 103 was a proven work horse....even after 60k miles.  The 110" scissored at low miles and I never put it through anything close to what I put the SEEG through (I was younger then......that's my excuse and I'm stickin to it  ;D).
