Top End Noise?
« on: August 24, 2014, 06:34:54 PM »

I'm still getting to know my new 2014 SERK, coming from an 2005 Wide Glide TC88.
This SE110 seems to have more noticeable "top end noise"...a definite valve-train chatter.

Is this normal?

Of course it could be just that I "hear it more" due to:
     a) windshield reflecting the valve-train noise back to my ears
     b) old Wide Glide had "well-worn" SE2 pipes and I heard a LOT more exhaust noise and
         couldn't hear the TC88's valves

Also...I seem to hear more "gear whine" from the Cruise Drive's 6-speed than I recall from the old Wide Glide's 5-speed, particularly in 4th and lower gears.

Any thoughts from those with (significantly) more CVO experience?

Thanks, and
Ride Safe!

I have a 2012 SESG and have the "top end" (lifter) noise and the whining gears as well. I think it's a common trait of a lot of 110's.

My 2014 Limited has a clatter/noise starting at about 3000-3500rpm range under moderate load.  Not sure if that is what you are hearing or if it is normal but with all the lifter failures I keep reading about I guess I should have it documented.

My 2013 has a lot of valve train clatter, especially under light loads in the 2500-3000 RPM range. I know if things are clattering there will be fretting and wear involved so it makes me nervous. Only have about 6K on this one but already thinking on going in there and making some changes to quiet it down and hopefully improve the reliability aspect.

I'm wondering what would be the minimum thing to do to quiet it down. I had a rebuild a few thousand km ago. ( at 28000km) I have put on 4500km since then including a 3500km trip through four states. It runs great but the ticking is bothersome. I asked the dealer to put in Screamin Eagle lifters. Didn't make much difference. Where to start and what would the cost be approximately ?

I have a hunch we all share the same problem and throwing Money at it isn't going to help very much, One of my riding group had a louder then usual 08 SEUC he was determined to quiet it down, SE push Rods, Black ops lifters, Roller Rockers, SE High volume oil pump, to name a few, Cost was around $3,800 when it was back together, it might have been a little quieter but not much.

I can tell you I am not concerned enough to throw my hard earned money at it. If it blows up MOCO can throw their money at it.  Of course i'm sure it will be when I am in the middle of know where on a Saturday night when it breaks.

My feeling is we shouldn't have to worry about these kind of things on bikes this new.  Of course we have beat this subject to death lately.

I've never understood why my 2003 103 was relatively quiet, but my 2010 110 sounds like it has a box of rocks in the primary and top end.

Perhaps HD employees have not been using hearing protection and over the years their hearing has eroded?  :nixweiss:   ::)

Thanks for all the replies!
I was a bit concerned - but, it seems the chatter & clatter is "normal" for SE110s.
I guess I need to "upgrade" to some loud(er) pipes and RIDE ON!
