I have a 97 FLHTCUI, had it since new and always had a slight clatter, the fairing holds a lot of the engine noise in so you will here clatter more on a fairing bike than a none fairing bike.
My 08 custom FLSTF runs smooth with no unusual engine noises at all.
My FLHXSE3 on the other hand has the clatter we all read about and I have learnt to live with it, it seems all 110,s have the trade mark of the clatter under slight load.
