Burning leg makes riding less than fun

So...  2011 CVO Ultra.

A short trip on the ride (10 miles) creates enough heat at the rear cylinder exhaust pipe that riding is not enjoyable at all. I've got a TTS.

Anything I can do quickly to cool things down without screwing things up? 

Trying to work out a drive~N~tune couple of days, but have not been able due to constraints...I am not totally sure that would resolve anything.

Any help is welcomed.

Have 2010 FLHXSE. V&H Power Duals/SESRT/tuned. No significant heat on legs from pipes and no heat deflector under seat. No lowers, which I think makes a big difference in moving heat away from rider. Some of the guys I ride with remove the lowers on Ultra's for the summer here in Maryland, and they say it makes a big difference in comfort level.

Good stop gap measure-- removing the lowers!

However, still looking for the tune idea......

The only way to really cut down on the heat is to eliminate the cat head pipe and  get the bike tuned on a dyno by a competent tech.

Ceramic coated (inside and out) catless head pipe.  A few vendors sell these (got mine from Jamie at FuelMoto).

Tuner (used a PoweVision unit, again, got it from FuelMoto)

Some folks have wrapped the head pipes as well...

Ward fans (helps the engine head cooling but not your right leg...)

Wear better riding gear (over pants, or riding jeans with reinforcements in the area next to the engine) or cover your legs with gold foil...

Highway pegs set at the proper angle so air goes into your pants and keeps a cool air pocket between your skin and the heat (do not laugh, it works until a bee goes in...)

Seriously...as a first step, removing the lowers is the only way to significantly reduce the heat.

I've been noticing that my rear cylinder is very hot as well.   I'm thinking the tune? I had mine adjusted with the tts and was trying to improve fuel economy.  I'm thinking that I should possibly have it checked out by my buddy Mark.  Just a thought.   :nixweiss:

Removing the lowers in the summer heat makes a huge difference!

Earlier this year I had GMR 577 cams, TTS tuner and a great tune done by hrdtail78 on here and it is now significantly cooler. Huge difference.

I'm sure the tune helped but the difference in the timing of the cam over the stock 225 I'm guessing made the big difference.

Don't forget, it's a big engine sitting between your legs. I just rode home a buddies new Victory Cross Tour (aka: ultra copy) and it was a very very very hot ride. Way hotter than my 2011 CVO Streetglide has ever been.

I know about removing the lowers.  I hate the thought of giving up my focal krc165s.  That's the only reason they are still on this summer.  I'm sure that has the most to do with it.  Pics used to remove them for the summer all the time.   Stuart.

Stu i could live without the speakers but i rode my uncles 14 sgs and instantly missed my lowers because of the nice quiet pocket they give my legs. On his bike i was getting blown all over.

Yep Jesse.  I think the lowers give the bike a better flow against wind resistance.  I knew there was something else  ???

Yep they can get hot unless you makes some changes. I agree it takes the fun right out. But there is a ton of info on how to cool them down. Big thing is ceramic coated head pipe will be a huge change for felt heat
