Engine runs too hot
« on: September 06, 2004, 11:09:21 PM »

Just got about 2200 miles on my '04 SEEG. It's my first 103 engine and I was told by the dealer that these bigger engines do run hotter. I just rode to Gattlinburg this past weekend and of course traffic was backed up for a couple of miles, by the time I got to downtown, the engine was really hot and started to "lope" similar to a hot cam in a hot rod. I thought I was fouling a plug but it ran smooth at a little higher RPM and when I got going again. I cooled off the engine by riding up one of the car/nature trails where the temp. was much cooler. Makes me wonder what may happen at a Daytona or Myrtle Beach ralley where traffic is much heavier and you have to wait much longer in traffic. Anyone out there taken there SEEG in a lot of stop and go traffic and experienced this? Just how hot can these things get before there is not enough oil pressure and the motor seizes? I plan on riding this motor at most of the Daytona and Myrtle Beach rallies. This excessive engine heat really concerns me since this is my first 103 engine. Am I overly concerned?  Any info. from you that are have more experience with this engine will be greatly appreciated....Thanks [smiley=confused5.gif]

when we were stuck in traffic for two hours at sturgis there were several other bikes shutting down due to overheating mine was just fine. In fact it seems to run quite a bit cooler than my  '02 classic with the 88ci. I have the race tuner and am running a bit on the rich side so i'm thinking this is helping. Otherwise I talked to a guy who had the harley fan installed on a ultra and he really liked it, said it made a huge difference in the engine temp. in traffic might be worth looking into if you do that much hot weather driving. part #91550-00b page 455 in the parts book. $380 bucks

I Had an 02 Ultra and have an 03 Ultra.  Both of those bikes ran hotter than my SCEEG.  I installed the electric fan on the 02.  It help, but, I had a couple of problems with it.  One, the sensor that cut the fan on at high temp was erratic.  I eventually had the fan wired to the accessory switch so that I could cut it on when I wanted it on.  The second problem was the three rubber mounts constantly broke.  I started carrying a couple extra in my tool kit (not hard to replace).

You might want to take a look at the leg fairing vents at eGlide Goodies (see the group buy forum).  Of course, it doesn't help with a motorcycle that's sitting still and just idilling.

Thanks guys for the suggestions, but I'm more concerned with the engine locking up or doing some other damage to the engine due to the exsessive engine temperature than with discomfort it causes me. I'm in the South and we have some extremely hot summers which only make it run hotter. Just don't know if this is normal for these 103 ci. engines. Thinking of putting on a set of Rineharts. I'm told they work very well with this motor. Anyone out there tried them and if so, what else needs to be done to correctly set up the engine for Rineharts. Thanks

There is a guy on this site that posts under the name of bigsal57 that has had good success with them and also posted a dyno sheet. Read his posts. http://flhrsei.org/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=CVO_TC;action=display;num=1057535659;start=4#4
