I always assumed if you check "avoid highways" the GPS will just route you to nothing but "loways".  I sure hope I wasn't wrong all these years.

Seriously, some of the stuff found in the settings of GPS devices really does make you scratch your head and then wonder just who the person was who came up with this stuff.  Kind of reminds me of the hilarious things you can still find to this day in owner manuals for Japanese, Korean, or Chinese products.  Maybe Garmin is using Chinese folks to do the software?

Yep, 'Highway' is Indonesian for 'Interstate'. I use a Tom-Tom in my truck and going down a 4 lane divded hwy 421 approaching I-77 the hot chick will say "Take the exit right and get on the Hwy"

We never gave that a second thought  :nixweiss: Up in the Great White North, all our Major roads are considered Highways.  But I guess it would sound strange to you guys calling your Interstate's a Highway.  :coolblue:

Don't forget "Parkways".  And old timers might also remember "Byways".

Getting back to the OP, so what exactly happens if you check the "avoid highways" box in the 2014 GPS?  Does it route you exclusively on two lane country roads, including dirt and gravel varieties?  What if the only route between you and your destination is a four lane paved "highway"?  Does it cancel the route and leave you stuck somewhere?

I seem to remember on my old Garmin a setting for avoiding unpaved roads, tolls roads, etc., but I don't remember one for "highways".  I guess I'll have to haul it out and check to see if this is an old Garmin thing, or just a new Garmin thing.
