Charging?
« on: September 06, 2014, 06:51:12 PM »

I own a 2005 screamin eagle Electra glide.....
Replaced battery with new HD battery! Volt gauges shows 11 volts at idle, but 14 volts on the highway! Highway no problems, but intown cruising eats the battery! I tested the battery and showing not charging at all at idle( even when I gave it rpms, still nothing) should I replace voltage regulator or just the stator, or both?
Thanks for any info!!!!
My bike has 29,000 miles!

When the gauge shows 11 volts, that's the battery voltage, and it's not charging.

When the gauge is showing 14 volts, you're seeing correct output from the voltage regulator, which is receiving the stator (alternator) current.  So the electrical system is working properly (so far).

The battery should be charging during this time (gauge shows 14v), and it will be unless there's a bad battery or a bad connection between the VR and the battery.

Questions: 1. How did you "test" the battery and see no charging?  2. Are you running a heavy electrical load in town, such as high power stereo, extra lights, and/or heated gear; maybe lots of short trips in town with many engine starts?  The charging system can't keep up with that, and the battery only holds so much.

A friend of mine with a elc meter(ohm metter) tested my battery while it was running and told me it was not charging at all? Yes I do have a after market stereo in the bike with a amp and extra speakers in the lowers! But the last few rides, I had stereo turned off, and also had running lights turned off, just to see if that would help, but no change! You think maybe change the voltage regulator first? Because the stator looks like a big job for me as I've never torn into one before!
Thanks for all the info,matt

Matt, it would be a better idea to have real diagnostics run on the charging system as opposed to just changing out parts hoping to guess right.  The diagnostics on a Harley charging system are pretty simple, if you have the right equipment.  Call a local dealership or independent and ask what they charge to do the full diagnostics, including a total current draw test, current output test, and voltage output test.
