That's the same thing we said on the early Twin Cams about the cam chain tensioners and oil pumps.  Harley never added those to the maintenance checklist either, just like the compensators and lifters and valve guides on the late models.  I think the guys who only put 10k miles or less on their bikes and trade every year might be onto something.  Of course now that Harley's depreciate just like Chevy's, it's getting much more expensive to trade that often. ;)

Are the newer versions in the 13 and 14 models any better?

The more things change, the more they stay the same.  ;) When I bought a brand new 1975 FXE Superglide, the hydraulic lifters were replaced twice in 500 miles under warranty, The second set it made it 50 miles, so I put in Sifton solids and pushrods, and took off for Estes Park, Co./Yellowstone/Sturgis, with 600 miles on the bike. Ran like a champ. Got a 2014 CVO Roadking in April of this year, with a case of deja-vu at 300 miles, installed S&S Premium lifters and adj. pushrods along with a cam and bearing change. Am I a sucker or what? PT Barnum nailed me a long time ago.  :laugh4:

Time will tell. :nixweiss:  In 2013 HD started putting the "new" Screamin eagle Tappets P/N 18572-13 in the 110 engines.  I had them installed in my 11.5 after the originals showed excessive wear after only 7400 miles.... so far the SE -13 version is holding up well. I just inspected them about two weeks ago during my maintenance/prep for our trip to Maggie Valley and they are showing no signs of wear after about 8000 miles of use.

It does seem that we are reading about fewer failures on the '13 and up bikes - but then perhaps owners are just changing them out before any issues arise.

I have over 45,000 miles on my S&S lifters. Cam is S&S 585 that does not have fast ramps. Beehive springs also are easier on the valve train.

If these lifters are a weak link....then I guess it would be a good idea to install adj push rods so that you can inspect and replace as required.

I can see it now...pre-ride inspection.
-Tire Pressure
-Lights
-Brakes
-Oil
-Drive Belt
-Lifters

Am I missing anything? ::)
