CVO LIFTER FAILURES
« on: September 06, 2014, 07:35:44 PM »

My forum friends, I know this subject has been discussed many times.
But, I was in my local dealer yesterday. There were a couple cam cases off of 110's. My curiosity got the best of me, because I have one also. I asked the service manger what's there problem? It's bad lifters. He showed them to me.
The point here is, the rollers were missing chunks of metal. Which trashed the oil pumps, cams + who knows what else. Everyone knows the rollers appear to be very finely ground. Inside the roller it appeared as large chunks of metal that had not melted together properly to form a fine grain metal. They were still intact with the lifter bodies and rolled smoothly. I don't know if the roller is cast or cut from steel an machined an heat treated. I'm not a metallergist.
I do have 60 years of working on engines an mechanical things. This is chity material for a roller. Manager say he sees them all the time! Said harley recommends changing at 15000 miles.
Well every body knows cams only turns half the RPM the engine turns, you can do the math. Are there any manufacturer in the US that build these thing to last?

Maybe I misquoted, I'm 72 an didn't wear my hearing aids when I'm riding. He might have said they recommend it. He could have determined an average in miles of the ones they have changed, just a guess tho. What does your manual state?

no matter what the machine or mfg

there is a WORLD of difference between what they tell the mechanics to DO and what the manual says

2 year old case skid steer - hose blows makes a mess in just the right place we have to mill and overlay a 20 ft square of running track

mechanic says - the fittings are defective, we just change them when they go bad... this is after we had the mobile hose guys come fix the hose because we can't wait weeks for the damn mechanics to show up....  understand this they KNOW the hose is going to fail on ALL of them but are only fixing them AFTER they blow up and make a giant messssss all over.

they refunded the hose repair cost - we ate the asphalt repair...

still under warranty, less than 500 hours on it - two joysticks this hose and a batch of electrical gremlins and a quick couple actuator so far and we have a year of warranty left.

new loader - blew its air last month - 300 hrs - 100 grand machine

new track skid - turbo, quick couple twice, several orings - in two months [every oring has been 35 gals of hydraulic oil all over the place...]

hd is actually better than most of the companies i deal with.

my 07 ultra & tleu  got new rings when it was about a month old - new Y pipe a year ago - everything else is quiet and perfect so far - knock on wood.

Show me the TSB, I am calling BS. This may be the dealers undocumented recommendation.
Reminds me of the Morris Minor, another fine piece of machinery. Recommendation was for decoking by pulling the head at some sort of crazy short interval. Times have changed, or have they?

Doesn't matter who said what, but the stock lifters are a time bomb. Not matter your mileage, if you have stock lifters you should change them out rather than wait to see if they fail, risking blowing your engine. Also, if you haven't changed your inner cam bearings, this should be done at the same time as the lifters.

Many people here have recommended S&S Premium lifters. You can find more by using the "search" feature in the main menu.

Well you certainly are an expert.  Could you explain the difference (besides the $100) and what do you charge to install, do you have either in stock, if I make an appointment, how long does it take?

Here's the cam.

You can decide for yourself if a well maintained Harley 110 has defects in materials and workmanship.

Oh, on my THIRD compensator as well.

Looks like an oiling problem to me. (or lack of oiling)

GMR 577 Cams, S&S Lifters and S&S Pushrods.

By the way, I have been using Mobil 1 since the first oil change and changed every 3,000 miles since. Needless to say I am very disappointed with the Harley 110 motor as well as their crappy Compensator "concept". For the same money I had a Honda S2000 that was very quick and received many many parking lot high fives about that machine. Sold it with 57,000 miles on it and NEVER had a single problem, issue, complaint etc... Needed a 4x4 truck.

I sold the S2000 and bought a used truck so I could have some extra money to fix my Harley POS.

I've got 4k on my 110 since a rear valve stuck open and caused a bent valve. Fingers crossed.
