Front Engine Mounts Velva-Ride vs Glide Pro vs OEM
« on: September 08, 2014, 12:07:22 PM »

In some of the past threads I might have mentioned that I've been running into a heck of a time with vibration and damage to the radio.

The stock mount gave out a few years ago, and I went with the MOCO replacement which was garbage. Then I ended up going with the Velva-Ride. I ran that a few years and seemed to be good at first, but got considerably worse. A year ago the radio started dying (channels cutting in and out) and Iron Cross said it had considerable vibration damage. I had already replaced the clamps and shorthead screws to the new versions, but I could see the fairing vibrate quite a bit in between 1,600 and 1,800 rpm. Got the radio back, and after 1/2 the season it was starting to die again. Damn.

Although I did find the engine rebuilder had the center engine mount screw torque too tight, retorquing only helped a little. I ended up calling Comp Cams, the maker of the Velva-Ride, and they said this mount really wasn't designed for anything over a stock 88. Seeing I have a 103 with a hotter cam and other work, he said I was really pushing it. I had them send new urethane bushings and that barely made a difference.

So, I finally bit the bullet and called GlidePro. He guaranteed his front engine mount would help alot or he'd give me my money back.  I have to say that based on the photos between the two brands, the Velva looks more more robust, but figured I had to try something, or forget about having a radio.

When I got it, side by side, there is really no comparison. The GlidePro Urethane inserts on the top and bottom are much larger and thicker.  That's probably why the metal housing had to be thinner. I installed it and jeez what a difference! The fairing barely moves at all. Gosh, I can't believe this nightmare is finally over.

So the bottomline is, I just wanted to share the positive review on the GlidePro. Based on testing the OEM, Velva-Ride, and the GlidePro, the smoothest by far is the GlidePro. Just make sure you watch the video and follow the alignment and torque instructions.

I hope this helps the next guy.

I'm a fan of the Glide Pro also.  I installed one in my SEUC a couple years ago and am very pleased!   :2vrolijk_21:

I tried the HD replacement. Drag Specialties then Glide Pro. The Glide Pro was the only one worth using. The HD and Drag POS's vibrated my teeth loose.
