What oil temp you running?
« on: September 11, 2014, 11:26:41 PM »

Last week I did a 300 mile round trip day on my '11 SESG 110.  The ride home was about 82 degree air temp, avg about 75 mph on the highway and just had a fresh oil change that day. When I got home, oil temp, according to digital gauge was 252 degrees.  I thought that was kind of high??  Should I be concerned?

How long have you had that digital dipstick?  If it's not a new toy, but something you've had for awhile, what kind of temperature readings have you been getting in the past?

Oil temps in the 230°F to 250°F range with ambient temps in the moderate range are absolutely normal for a Twin Cam engine.  It's also normal for those temps to vary quite a bit depending on how hard you work the engine, and how much or how little airflow there is to cool the engine and the oil.  There isn't one specific number that's "right".

Given the conditions that you mentioned, 250 sounds about right.  SJ Ron :)

I appreciate all of your feedback.  On my previous HD's (there have been many) I always ran btw 220 and 230.  Being a 110, I understand more heat.  But, conversely, I figured the bigger oil cooler would deal with that.  plus, I'm cat-less with big headpipe and Fullsac cans.  So I figured I should be in that 220-230 range?  I guess not...

The 110 is quite the heater. Nice when it's chilly, not so much other times.

Your temps are ok.  I added an Ultra Cool which dropped my temps about 25*. I would say 220-230 is ideal for a twin cam.

Check out wards TStat  for the oil cooler. Our oil coolers are not full flow until 220*F
I did the T-Stat eliminator so all of the oil has to flow thru the cooler. I also added the wards FCS Cooling fans. That guys on here told me about. Best money spent in awhile. The 110 no longer is trying to melt my soul into the pavement at a stop light
