Versions of SE
« on: September 16, 2014, 08:45:28 AM »

Without being over techy, can someone explain the numeric identifiers on the SE versions?  I just want to know if I should really plan on stage (whatever) and which one really makes sense (most bang for the buck).

Thanks from a very new owner.

Take Care.

People have different ways to describe Stage 1 vs Stage 2 vs Stage 4. Below is Harley SE kits available for a stock 96 ci engine for comparison purposes. I have highlighted the additional mods as you move down the kits.

This Stage 1 Big Bore Kit lets you increase the displacement of your Twin Cam 96™-equipped model from 96 cubic inches (1584cc) to 103 cubic inches (1690cc).
Includes Big Bore cylinders, Big Bore flat top piston assemblies and a Stage I Air Cleaner Kit with one-piece back plate, integral breathers, all mounting hardware, and gaskets
High-performance clutch spring is included.

The Stage II Big Bore Kit provides the parts you need to increase the horsepower of your EFI-equipped model. The 50-state street legal kit increases the displacement of your Twin Cam-equipped model from 96 cubic inches (1584cc) to 103 cubic inches (1690cc).
Includes Stage II (SE-255) cams, Big Bore cylinders, Big Bore flat top pistons, clips, and a Stage I Air Cleaner Kit with one-piece back plate, integral breathers, a high-performance clutch spring, all mounting hardware, and gaskets

Stage 4 Kit includes Screamin' Eagle® CNC Ported Factory Cylinder heads, 58mm ETC throttle body, SE-259E cams, 10.5 to 1 compression pistons, Perfect-Fit pushrods, SE clutch spring, and all required engine gaskets
Street Performance kit produces 103 hp and 110 ft-lbs of torque
All EFI-equipped models require ECM calibration (priced separately)

Thanks Kojak2

So I am starting to think that this was a dumb question to ask.  I guess then that on the 110 ci engine there are no stages to add on as such?

Thanks for the help again...

The CVO engine is already considered to be a Stage I engine, since it comes from the factory with increased displacement, a high flow air cleaner, and a somewhat lower restriction exhaust system.  You can still go to Stage II by adding a bolt-in cam.  Stage III would involve a cam change and compression increase.  Stage IV usually involves adding headwork and possibly higher performance cams to the Stage III mods.  Harley has a Stage III kit for the 110 engine in the SE catalog that includes 259e cams and 10.5:1 compression pistons.

All such mods will also require proper tuning of course.

Not a dumb question at all. I've often considered an upgrade, but it's a struggle considering I don't know much of a difference it would make in HP and TQ. More importantly, I don't know how it would alter the seat-of-the-pants affect. I like low to mid-range torque, and the 255 cam that comes with the 110 provides this. Also have to consider engine life when you upgrade. I wouldn't want to spend thousands of dollars for a bump of only 10 ft pounds of torque. Lots to think about.

Depends what engine you start from. You can go from a 88 to a 95, 96 to a 103 or 110 etc. For majority of riders, bolt-on mods and a mild tune is the way to go, doesn't void the warranty and keeps you engine basically stock and reliable.
On my CVO bikes, I usually just change slipons and leave the rest alone. Now that the non cvo bikes (2014+) come stock with 103 and the SE255 cams, I would probably only change the intake and slipons and be done with it. But I don't worry about the fastest 0-60 time, only worry about passing oomph at highway speeds and climbing steep inclines loaded up and rarely ride obove 80 mph so its all about low and midrange torque for me.

Hey RoadDawg that 259e cam, hc pistons and headwork would do very well in that CVO Breakout and a 2 into 1 Propipe would be a good finish. I did that on my 2009 CVO Fatbob and it really is super strong. I am not so inclined to put the same cam and all in the Limited because they are different bikes with different purposes.

In my experience the stage one of just a breather, pipes and a tune does not add a lot of performance. You need a cam plus compression to make a real gain, IMHO. Displacement changes are nice but if you do that much go further with the cams and pistons or you might come out a little disappointed. I did several times.

Thanks, Dr. D. I might just do that.

Thanks everyone..  Appreciate the info...  I think I am going to make sure I have a good seat on her the way she is and then think about the upgrades.  It does help understanding.  Not sure if I will ever turn a wrench on the bike but it helps knowing my options.

Take Care.
