Suggestions please.
« on: September 19, 2014, 03:45:58 PM »

The tourpack lid organizer on my bike has come loose. I think the heat from the past few weeks succeeded in softening the adhesive (which never worked well anyway) and now it's hanging loose.

Who here has experienced this, and what type of cement/glue have you found success with?

Thank you.

I had the same problem....ended up using contact cement then just to make sure used fender washers on the tour pak luggage rack bolts to also hold it in place.

Why not rivet it in place?

Get some 3M double sided tape, the kind body shops use for moldings, and some adhesion promoter. Clean the old tape off thoroughly and reapply using the promoter and it will be there for good.

Mark, try an auto parts store if you've got something close by.  Most should have it.  Especially if they've got a paint section to supply body shops.

If you buy at Home Depot, pay cash!   ::)

I'm a recent victim of Home Depot having credit card information hacked.    :(   (I'm pretty sure I haven't purchased any diet formula from South Korea...)

Fortunately the credit card company was on top of it, and except for minor hassle of having a new card issued, I came out financially whole.

Thanks guys, I've just never heard of an adhesive "promoter". I was just looking for a name brand of what to ask the guys at PepBoys for.

3M makes both products you need, the 3M™ Super Strength Molding Tape and the 3M™ Adhesion Promoter 06396.  The tape is available in different widths and is gray in color with a red backing strip.

You need to clean the surfaces that are to be joined with solvent, isopropyl alcohol will do the job.  Then apply the adhesion promoter per the instructions, followed by applying the double sided tape to one part, removing the red liner, and then applying it to the other part.  Press and hold in place (it's a pressure sensitive adhesive), I suggest at least 30 seconds.  The bond will increase in strength over time, so don't load any stuff into the organizer for at least 12 hours, preferably 24 hours.

This tape is pretty tough.  I used it in my saddlebag to mount a couple straps that I use to secure the tool kit.  It's been there for almost ten years and still doing just fine.  I also used it to secure the battery tender pigtail to the metal panel on the frame between the engine and the battery compartment.  That has also been there for about ten years.

Surface prep is very important, as is the case with any adhesive.  The attached pdf file is the tech sheet for the adhesion promoter and includes the instructions for its use.

Thanks Jerry for the info. I have used the #3M tape and like it, but it comes loose after a year. I need to get the adhesion promoter. I have some now that just released last week on my saddlebag orgaizers.  Will try it.

Mark,

I had the same issue the thing would always come loose.  I removed my luggage rack, marked the back of the organizer and cut clearance holes in it.  Then when I bolted the carrier back on used fender washers on the bolts ran them through the carrier can't move now.

Well that's what I did, and it seems to be working really well! Let's see how long it lasts, no doubt longer than the HD stuff. Which brings up the usual question, how come the MoCo doesn't include that quality stuff in the kit? Pre Installed 3M tape on the back of the organizer, and include a swab of alcohol prep and promoter?

Probably because it costs a few cents more per package.  A few cents here and there adds up to a big bonus for the company execs.
