ECM swap
« on: September 21, 2014, 09:16:54 PM »

Curious could you swap out an ECM from lets say a 2014 CVO to a 2015 CVO and it would work.??? Or is the ECM tied into the bike via the VIN

Tied to the VIN. The Bike will only run for a seconds with the mismatched VIN

Humm...Long story short, my '13 CVO Ultra ran on 1cylinder (other cylinder, bent valves) with an '11 Ultra  ECM.

If the swap is done correctly and from same level of cal. it can work.  The new ECM needs to have the TSM or TSSM married to it.  It starting and running for short period and dying is a sign the TSSM is not married.

Was gonna trade my 14 CVO Limited for a 15 CVO RG & since i already have the TTS map installed was thinking i could maybe swap ECM from bike to bike. The salesman actually suggested this. If it would work would be cool since they are delivering the bike to me and i could do the swap... I was trying to avoid having to buy another TTS tuner. I was being cheap....LOL..

If the dealer suggested it, they should be able to marry the new ecm to the bike. I know some Car ECMs can not have the VIN updated though.

I had a sneaking suspicion that was the situation. ;D

The dealer can do the setup routine to assign the ECM to the bike and to marry TSSM, just like they have to do when replacing an ECM with a new one for any other reason.  If I remember what Steve Cole said once before when this subject came up, the TTS is married to the unique serial number of the ECM, not the VIN of the bike.  You may want to verify that.  You may also want to verify there really is no difference between the two model years as far as the ECM's are concerned.  I haven't been able to access 2015 part numbers yet, so I have no idea if any change was made.

Find out how much the dealership is going to charge you to do the swap and setup of the ECM.  You may find you won't save all that much versus just buying another TTS and giving the current one to the new owner of your old bike.

The 15 ECM is the same part as the 14. About doing the swap there are some "got ya's" along the way but it can be done if you play with it enough. The truth is, your going to screw around doing it, trying to get everything right. If you want to do it on the cheap just put the 14 back to stock then have us update the unit to work on two bikes. It runs $200 for the update so you've got to ask yourself what's your time worth trying to save the $200?

You can contact any dealer in your area or where ever you bought it from to start with. If you get stuck you could call the TTS office and they can also try to help you through it.

all you have to do is trade ECM & TSSM it will work with no problems no need to relearn anything BUT the ECM WILL HAVE THE WRONG VIN NUMBER I have done it.

Since the OP is thinking of switching this from a '14 to a '15 I can see this being a real concern for him and the person that gets his old bike if either have to return to the dealer for warranty work. :nervous:

2014's are different, they do not have a TSSM any longer, so it's a bit more involved. As I said is could be done if it's worth your time and trouble.

I would load my original MTE before I swapped.  Might avoid some snags if the dealer is going to do it.  Easy enough to do and you can reload your tuned MT8 when done.

It still has to be sent back to TTS for the update for 2 bikes correct

Already got the 2015 bike. Didn't bother swapping the ECM.. Will just have the TTS updated for 2nd bike.
