change 13" air shocks with 12"
« on: September 23, 2014, 05:23:52 AM »

Would I be able to change out on my 11' SERGU and use say the 12" shock from a street glide? Alan

Is your body that stout that it can handle less than 1" of rear wheel travel with the 12's?  Man I thought every Harley in the line up could use some extra rear wheel travel, my back would not appreciate giving me less travel that it already has.  If you insist on 12's get a good pair that will improve the ride.

The 12's have 2.1 inches of travel not 1"  :nixweiss:

Yes.  The shocks will fit, you will give up some suspension travel, you will lower the rear of the bike slightly, and you'll get rid of the air operated preload system and replace it with a hydraulic single sided system.  What exactly are you trying to accomplish?

One inch, two inch my point is why give up much needed suspension travel?   That is the specs on a brand new shock, after some adjustments are made for the SAG, preload, compression  & dampening if available the amount of available travel will drop significantly.  Sometimes I just forget what some people are trying to accomplish.  Sorry for the error.

No worries on the error. I have never had a touring bike with anything but 12" rear shocks and I have no issues with bottoming out or scraping in turns. I wouldn't go any lower but I am happy with the 12's.

Really, just want to lower the ultra. I'm 5'6', I'm only able to have my toes touching the ground. Someone just gave me their air shocks off of a street glide, I just installed them. I am now able to be flatfooted on the ground. 1" made a difference.

:2vrolijk_21:    I assumed you were talking about the other 12" shocks that aren't air adjustable when I posted my response.  Since you have the air shocks (Harley calls them the Profile Low Touring Shocks), be aware that you shouldn't lower the air pressure thinking it will be a good way to lower the bike even more.  The ride will be extremely harsh, with the shocks bottoming often, if you don't run enough air in them.
