Rear cylinder ticking
« on: September 25, 2014, 04:36:18 PM »

Just came back from a 2k run last week and I am now hearing a ticking in the rear cylinder, I noticed something wasn't quite right (sounding) mid-way on the trip.....kinda blew it off.
Front cylinder seems fine, bike runs fine-------until something comes loose :)

It's going in for a 45k service next week, is there something I should have them check?

My signature will tell you what I'm running and I would say I have 15k on the Comp, lifters, pushrods, and cams.

Thanks
Dick

Could be a rear exhaust valve beginning to stick.

Another vote for rear exhaust valve and guide.  It was a major problem on the original 110's, and even after the "fix" in the "Upgrade Program" in 2008 they have still had more than a few reported failures.  Several people on this site can tell you all about it from personal experience.

Seems like that would be difficult to check. I actually have confidence in my HD service department so I'll pass that on and see what he thinks. That SOB takes a dump.......might as well get a 124"  :coolblue:

Can you use a stethoscope and tell which end of the pushrod the tick is on?  Noisier at the cylinder head or noisier near the lifter?

Does it take longer for the lifters to pump up at startup?  Any change?

It would be difficult to pinpoint the tick other than its in the rear cylinder. I road it 470 miles on Sunday and just knew something sounded different, you know how your scoot should sound and mine was just "out of the norm". I fired it up this afternoon and the tick doesn't go away after 3-4 minutes..........just ticks away. I doubt something is going to go right away but I wouldn't trust it going to Biketoberfest until I find out what it is.

Given the task/expense of removing a head for inspection, I'd probably install a set of lifters on the rear cylinder and see if the noise remains or goes away.  Easy and relatively inexpensive.  If you end up having the heads done, you'll probably install new lifters anyway.   If the noise is still there, then you're likely going to have to pull the head and inspect the valves...   :nixweiss:

I think that's a option to consider, as you said relatively inexpensive. I hate to be a "parts changer"
but in this case it may be prudent.
I'll keep you posted after I talk to the tech and have it serviced, I'm not sure I can get a set of lifters that quick but I'll give it a shot.

If you suspect a valve guide starting to shift maybe a mechanic buddy has a borescope that you can insert into the rear cylinder spark plug hole -- after of course removing the spark plug -- and give the cylinder/head  a look.

I Know we have one where I work - it will even record pictures/video of the inspection to an SD card, but unfortunately I'm to far away from you to be much help......

I'd probably check the compression and do a leakdown of that cylinder also.  It's possible to have good compression and good leakdown and still have a sticking valve - but on the other hand if you have bad compression or bad leakdown you know you likely have an issue with the head.  I'd do that before installing a set of lifters...
