Difference in paint jobs?
« on: October 02, 2014, 12:46:48 AM »

While on the factory tour in York, I learned that the CVO models are not painted at the York factory as all the other Touring, Softail, and Trike models are.  I think they said the CVO parts were painted in Milwaukee and shipped to York for assembly.  That made me wonder if the CVO paint jobs are done differently.  Any comments?

I've read that a company called Gunslinger (in CO I think) does the factory paint but getting that confirmed from MoCo is pretty much impossible.

The last time I heard,  (2013)  it was done at Calibre in (Saukville) Wisconsin and another company in CO.
Prior to that all CVO painting was done at Caliper, I believe.

Does anyone know the difference as far as quality between the factory jobs on the other models and the CVO paint jobs?  For example do they add more clear coats, etc.?

As of 2013, Gunslinger was doing the majority of the CVO paint

Harley uses outside vendors for the CVO paint, not their own paint facilities.  Over the years there have been many widely reported paint problems with CVO's, while the standard bike paint jobs have been rated among the best in the motorcycle industry.  In other words, in terms of the quality and consistency of the paint job, the stock Harley paint job is superior, it just isn't as "flashy".

Jerry, maybe that's true on your '05, but the paint on my '11 is superior and is crisper and deeper than any stock job I've seen. I constantly get compliments.  Not only that, but I've done a customized "expansion" of stock cvo paint scheme by 2 different custom painters and you'd never be able to tell which is factory and which is custom.

One reason I've asked this is because my 2011 CVO RG Ultra seems to have a better paint job than my 2011 regular RG Ultra did.
