Derby cover screw replacements
« on: October 02, 2014, 08:37:57 PM »

During the last oil change one of my stock derby cover screws tried to strip at the torx head. Figured I would go ahead and replace them with some polished ones. Should I just get the chrome ones from Harley? Or has someone found some better ones from somewhere else?

I picked up replacement hex head chrome ones from my local m/c supply store.

Personally, I prefer stainless  -  no flaking or peeling & the center will never rust.  Polished stainless is fairly pricey but I like the satin finish.  You can always polish your own with some jeweler's rouge & a buffing wheel on a bench grinder. If there's a Fastenal store near you, check it out. Some Ace Hardware stores carry stainless. Fastenal also supplies Harley with some of its chrome fasteners which Harley marks up about 250%.

The trouble with Harley's Chrome ones is that they rust in the socket.  So I went for a show polished stainless motor kit from this place:

www.alloyboltz.com

Quality is excellent, and the price more than reasonable.

T-Roy, if you have a local True Value Hardware I would check them out. The one near me has pretty much every chrome bolt I have ever needed at great prices. Regarding the Derby cover screw or bolts stripping, they are very small and you need to have that torx head straight and buried when you pull them out. I try not to over tighten mine and sometimes they still kind of make a snapping noise when I pull them out. No sort of lock tite needed. CAHDBIKER

Thanks for all of the suggestions guys!! I just realized I have 25 dollars worth of points at my local Harley dealer so I will just get the Harley ones for now. Once they start peeling and rusting I will find some polished stainless ones.

My stock screws seemed like a soft metal plus seemed to have a heavy dose of locktite from the 1k service.  I say this because they were covered with a white residue when removed for 5k service.  I replaced with the HD chrome for ease of picking them up which seem a bit stronger than stock but as stated they tend to rust and still may strip if your not careful.  At 30k I have one now that almost stripped at last fluid change.  My local Ace Hardware has an excellent stock of chrome and SS so may end up with allen heads at some point.  Metal polish like Flitz will make SS hard to tell apart from chrome with very little rubbing.

In my area, both Ace Hardware and True Value Hardware stock polished stainless steel fasteners.  Much more competitively priced than the MOCO chrome option.   :2vrolijk_21:
