Trouble Filling my Gas Tank
« on: October 03, 2014, 06:43:18 AM »

Last two times I filled my tank (two different gas stations) I had the nozzle shut off before the tank was full. When I looked into the opening I could see gasoline. No matter how much I tried, I could not get another drop into the tank. I had to bring up the kickstand and sit on the bike to get the final two gallons into it. I don't put the nozzle all the way inside, just an inch or two. I pump slowly, just squeezing the handle so I don't have gas gushing out and over my tank. Have 3500 miles on the bike and this wasn't happening before this past week. Anyone else having this problem?  :-*

Every time I fill mine up, the nozzle goes in to deep and stops the air flow around the end of nozzle shutting it off. I have to pull it out a little and watch it fill up in the tank, otherwise i get about half/three quarters of a tank.

Possibly the problem is the flow rate of the gas pump(s)...  The faster the flow rate the more difficult it is to get the tank completely full...

Go to your favorite gas station, find the slowest working pump and marry it. I always fill mine sitting upright off the kickstand and fill it almost to where I can't get another drop in, then I rock it side/side and let it go down more and repeat. Why? because I check my mileage every fill up and to be accurate you have to be consistent. Fast pumps are a PITA since no matter how easy or how far you stick the nozzle in the tank gas still splatters out like you mentioned even when you barely squeeze it. A nice slow pump is best .... even the wife told me that. ;D

I was thinking about doing just what you say. You've confirmed it for me. Thanks.

For years now, many of the gas stations around the Sturgis Rally slow their gas pumps to a trickle during the period of the rally.  A good friends elderly parents live in Sturgis, and complain to no end about how long it takes to fill their truck with gas during the rally...

I always fill the tank while on the kickstand, you just have to ensure the nozzle is not very far into the tank.  Always fill up to the top of the tank without any issues.
