How important is heated winter storage?
« on: October 07, 2014, 11:21:56 AM »

I have never used heated storage before but I have a friend who argues I am crazy just putting my bike in an unheated storage unit. What are the benefits of heated storage?

Dunno. I keep mine in my unheated garage or unheated 12x16 shed with a tender plugged in. 5 years without a hitch.

I think that it iss more important to keep the humidity down.  Where I live, you can store unheated, but if you warm it up to work on it or whatever, the frost will melt, possibly on bearing surfaces and then when you let it cool down again....to minus 30 or so, not only will that moisture freeze, but it can cause corrosion on bearing surfaces.  For that reason it is important that if you take your unheated ride and warm it up to work on it, run it for long enough to get it up to normal operating temps, which will hopefully allow any moisture to vaporize and leave via breather etc.  If you are one who wants to fire up your ride for a few minute periodically, heated storage eliminates this risk.

I’ve stored my bikes both in heated/unheated spaces over the years. As long as it’s out of the weather it will work okay in an unheated space – still a lot warmer than outside. I have found that freezing/thawing cycles and condensation issues can be problematic on chrome and other parts, like riding in the rain often would do. These days I store two bikes at my local dealer in winter most years because they make it easy. I wouldn’t have any problem keeping them stored at home though.
