« on: October 07, 2014, 04:15:06 PM »

Does anyone have a number in degrees that the motor runs cooler after tuner and dyno I have been told 80 to 100 degrees does that sound right. From factory lean. Thanks

I'm sure your going to get numbers all over the place. You need to define what your going to use for a measuring stick. Engine Temp, Head Temp exhaust temp ect. If your expectations are 80 - 100 degree's engine temp its never going to happen.

I was at a dealer and made the comment that new bike sure hotter than 2010 with 96 in it and he said put a tuner on it and get it dynoed it would shave close to 100 degrees. Just curious if anyone had real numbers exhaust head or oil. Before stock lean and then after good tune.

I have been fighting the heat issue for some time.   My Dyno tune by a good tuner only saved me 5~10* in oil temps.   I added a ultra cool fan assisted oil cooler which was good for about 20* over the factory cooler.  Get rid of you cat with a good head pipe and muffler upgrade.  Many on here swear by fullsac and tts tuner.  I would not recommend the HD tuner, go the TTS route.  You need to fine a GOOD tuner if you are going to spend the money!  Steve Cole of TTS I believe has some good canned maps for the fullsac set up and you might get away with out spending big bucks on a full Dyno tune.   If you are going to spend the money on a full Dyno check with Doc at Docs performance in Florida.  He regularly trains techs from all over the country on how to tune.   He is considered one of the best in the business and ism a straight shooter.  The are other very good Dyno guys out there but the are more hacks than pros.   Since Doc trains so many and is consider one of the best, I would give him a call first.  I used oil temp because I can get a very accurate temp.  100 * Temp change is BS unless you are talking head temp and I would still say that sounds fishy.

An air cooled HD engine is going to run in the 250 - 310 degree range, that is just what they do and anyone who tries to tell you they are going to lower that by 100 degrees is someone you do not want to use for your bike! The exhaust temperature is what most people feel as that runs between 900 - 1400 depending on how hard your running the engine at the time.

Steve. I have gotten my temps from the high 280s down to the 250 range on a hot day.  Is there any benefit in trying a secondary oil cooler to get down to the 230s?

I know they are "pricy", but for the guys that are very concerned about temps, why not get the Oil Bud cooler. Haven't heard from anyone getting above 230 after installing it. JS

Is it going to hurt or help I really cannot answer. I have seen some oil coolers limit oil flow to the point that it could cause damage while others are fine. I just do not know how to answer the question across the board, other than to say be careful when doing it and make sure oil flow isn't an issue after the addition of a cooler.

My 15 CVO Road glide Ultra will be tuned by Doc during Biketoberfest.  He also tuned my built CVO King which even will all the engine work is the smoothest running best throttle response of any harley I have ever owned.  Another friend here in TN has had at least three bikes tuned by him.

I agree with the above re. tune. Steve at GMR tuned my S&S 124" and it ran cooler than the guys I ride with who just throw pipes on a 103" or 110" and a dealer "flash". I don't have hard numbers, just based on red light dancing and complaints after rides.

Steve, what is your take on head temps on the 103s these days or at least as normal as you can explain?  With my Dakota Digital gauges staring me in the face it became a concern to me this morning on a 50° morning when I rolled up into traffic and my head temps climbed to 337°.  Oil temps were fine and within range staying at about 200 - 205°

I'm running ported heads, DX head pipe, 2.25" cores in 4" CVO cans, Andrews 57H.

Thanks
Todd
