CVO RK 2014 strong front end vibrations around 2000RPM
« on: October 10, 2014, 06:16:01 PM »

Hi out there!
The topic tells the story: I barely have 900miles on my RK and when accelerating and more prominent when decelerating the windshield (still the stock splitter) vibrates about half an inch and you can definitely feel it also in the bars around 2000RPM. Also when I choose a gear to be steady around 2000 RPM, of course, or just sitting on the bike advancing the throttle in neutral to 2000 RPM. So I'm sure it's not the wheels or any imbalance there.
Dealer did first change the windshield because after 750 miles it was already so shacky the it rattled like hitting it with drumsticks. No change besides the new one makes yet no noise. Obviously it might do the same soon.
Second visit again a test ride by a tech and I was told more or less to accept it....it's the 110 engine...try to avoid 2000 RPM...it's a Harley...!
I had previously ridden a "normal" RK not having anything similar.
Any comments are welcome. Maybe I will contact also another dealer but I'm first curious if you guys have any ideas. Thx!

I had the exact same problem with my 2014. It bothered the crap out of me.

I had the entire exhaust off changing the head pipe and mufflers and the issue is GONE. I changed my stock headpipes for a 2012 version that I decatted, and the mufflers were 2012 parts that i installed the fullsac baffles in, so there was no change in the parts, just not the same parts. I honestly don't know why the vibration went away unless the crossover was in a bind or something like that. I really don't care either cause it eliminated the vibration.

Try loosening the exhaust everywhere and putting it together again....

Hope it helps

Not much help, but I have 3k on my bike, and there is no vibration, haven't noticed the wind splitter screen vibrate at all. I have standard headers but V&H slip ons.

I have the V&H X pipe and just installed V&H carbon fiber slip ons and have no vibration, even at new I had nothing like that.

What kingpin is talking about, if it is like mine was, is a vibration that shakes the windscreen so hard that it makes a chattering noise particularly under deceleration. I knew that something was wrong with the bike and even worried that the crank might be scissored. You cannot imagine my relief the first time I rode it after the exhaust upgrade.

Before at 60 in 6th gear it would shake so bad that you would not ride it in that range, either downshift or speed up. Also when coming to a stop, I would pull in he clutch instead of using the gears to help slowdown to avoid the shaking.

I hope you get it sorted out, I would start with readjusting the exhaust. Might be in a bind like mine was.

Shrader is giving you good advice, and it very well could be your problem.  In particular, loosen and retighten your exhaust at your cylinder heads and at the exhaust mounting bracket located beneath your transmission side cover.  Having your exhaust system in a "bound" condition will certainly introduce the type vibration you are describing.  Better yet, convince your dealership technician to do the work for you, and he may learn something along the way...

Exhaust system misaligned or in a bind as per Shrader's post would be my first inclination.  Loosen every connection, bounce and shake the bike around, fire the engine up and run it up to 2500 rpm for a moment, shut it down. then start to tighten all the connections starting at the heads and working back.

The next thing I'd check, if that doesn't fix the problem, is the engine mounts for the same sort of binding problem.

As Scott mentioned, your dealer really should take care of this stuff for you.

Well, no weird vibrations in mine...  Everything that shakes seems to shake at its normal rate...

I'll have the 1000miles inspection coming up and I'll give my dealer a last chance. Here in the "valley" are at least 6 HD-dealers. I'm looking to do some upgrades anyway so one might be more than happy to help me out if not the one where I bought is not openminded to the ideas! Good when you can choose! Thx again. I'll post any news asap.

Could be the bike screaming for a downshift???? That's on the verge of lugging the motor aint it? If the exhaust is bound up it will induce some weird vibrations. Its usually felt in the floorboards as well as the handlebars. Good advice here on loosening the exhaust bolts. Go for a short ride with all exhaust mount bolts loose. Notice any difference? Vibration gone? Tighten mounts one at a time starting at the exhaust ports, working down to the support under the right side transmission cover, then the crossover hanger, then back to the slip on clamps and then hanger bolts under the bags. Ride around the block after each mount is tightened one at a time, look for any change in vibration. Hope this helps.

Thx again. One thing: how many bolts do I have to untighten? (I'm not a native english speaker, hope it's clear what I mean

Two on each head.
One holding the header too the mount under the transmission.
One holding the crossover.
One Clamp and two bolts on each muffler but it may not be necessary to loosen them.

You will have to take off the front and rear heat shields to get to the exhaust bolts at each head. There are two hose clamps holding each of these to the pipe.
