09 SEUC engine noise compared to 2010 and newer
« on: October 12, 2014, 06:03:02 AM »

HI to all. I hope you all are having a great riding season. I was curious if the newer 110 engines make the same noises that my 09 does. I am referring to the "valve train noise" between 2200 and 3000 RPM. I am on the fence about doing anything about it because even though it bugs me to no end, the bike has a fulsac stage one set up, uses virtually no oil between changes and runs great. I have about 22k on it now and it sounds exactly the same as when new, super quiet at start up then when warm I get the "valve train noise". My hypothesis is that the engine expands and the pushrods don't so I am getting some slack in my valve train. I was thinking about doing the following: S&S premium lifters, and screaming eagle tapered pushrods(slightly over extended as some guys on the site recommend) thinking that would get rid of the noise between 2200 and 3000 RPM. Just for the record I have made mostly long trips and the engine always sounds the same. It doesn't matter if it is 50 degrees out or 112 degrees outside. Any comments would be appreciated. It is still under warranty and I will get the ESP next year. I don't ride it too hard  and it is well taken care of. Amsoil in the engine, Formula+ in the primary and Redline in the trans. Any comments or enlightening information would be appreciated. Thanks in advance CAHDBIKER

I have a 2010 cvo streetglide and have exactly the same issue as you have with valve train noise it has been with the bike since the day I got it and I now have 27,000 miles and like you mine runs great and goes through a little oil but nothing significant , I just bought the red line oil for the motor as I have heard from others this can quiet things down but I have yet to do the change , I have also been thinking of changing out some top end parts

markp1965, thanks for the response. If I make any changes I will post what I did and the results. But the saying " if it ain't broke don't fix it" keeps me from pulling the trigger on the lifters and pushrods. I have an excellent technician Bennett's Performance in Long Beach. I think I will let him ride it and see what he has to say. CAHDBIKER

Do the lifters/pushrods, and consider 24D cams. The stock 255 cams are ticky in the rpm range you describe.

This is just my opinion. All the big twins I have ridden since 1992 have had this noise (2200-2800 rpm) under a light load such as cruising down the road. Give it a little throttle of back off a tad and the noise goes away. The sound does vary in intensity from bike to bike and what model does not seem to make a difference. I have heard it on Evo, S&S, Twin Cam, Merch motors in size from 80 inches to 120's.

Sportster motors don't make this sound. At least I have never heard it while riding one. I am always relieved when I do a PDI on a new Harley and hear the same sounds on a brand new bike and realize "YEP, THE ALL DO THAT!!!!" LOL

When I worked at a Honda shop in the 70's GoldWing riders complained of sounds the motors made and Honda simply enclosed the engine.

I don't know about that particular noise but I once was at a gas station when a guy on a Sportster pulled up I couldn't believe his motor sounded like metal was running through it. He said always that noisy on hot days. And I thought my Jim's motor was noisy. :nixweiss:

Do you still have the original compensator? The CVO '09 model was the last year HD still used the lightweight compensator in the cvo then in '10 they started putting in the new improved version (vastly improved from '09 but still problematic to this day).
