But in the real world not everyone wants to spend five thousand bucks to "hopefully" improve the reliability of their five year old Harley.

Agreed, but not everyone wants to keep throwing Mother Harley 38, 42, 44 K......whatever they want for CVO's these days.
I for one would rather put 5-10k in a bike that's already set up the way I want it......which cost much more than 5k just to do that  :nixweiss:

I don't disagree Dick, and if it is the intent of the OP to keep it forever then by all means spend the many thousands of bucks it will take to hopefully fix all the flaws Harley created.  My comment was more of a generic one about how every simple issue brought up around here is rapidly escalated by many of the folks posting a response.  Simple questions about "should I change the inner cam bearings and lifters", for instance, usually wind up with people jumping in to promote everything from a complete rebuild from the crank up, to pulling the stock engine and installing an S&S 124.

what would be a typical  ballpark parts cost on replacing the lifters , springs and cams

I just went through this and my bike runs great and is much quieter... the only thing I wish I would have done is to go back with a set of adjustable pushrods instead of using the stock ones. Total including a good tune should run $1800 - $2000 (parts & labor).. but don't be surprised if you find other issues when you pull the heads.

Good luck
