Freight and Prep
« on: October 23, 2014, 10:03:55 PM »

To all of you with new bikes recently, how much are you paying for freight and prep???  Was talking to a dealer today and they wanted close to $1500 for freight and prep......thought that sounded very high.

Mike

The 1500 is high. It may be that the dealer is using this to get more profit while still being able to say they are a MSRP dealer.

When I bought the RK they charged me 435 freight and around 100 setup, but I know those were abnormally low figures.

At the end of the day how bad do you want it? That blue and orange sure does look good.....

The H-D website list $435 for freight on the '15 CVO's. Prep charge of about $1000 is just addition dealer profit and should be negotiable, or really shouldn't be there at all.

That sounds like what I was thinking.

I paid neither and whilst it was that months 'special' these charges don't seem to have crept back in to a number of dealers prices.

Prep is pure BS,  if you buy enough bikes at the same dealer they should not charge you at all for freight it's like saying thanks for coming back. I haven't paid freight or prep on the last 5 bikes and paid less than MSRP on all of them.

Harley already pays the dealer for the small amount of actual "prep", like installing the loose parts that aren't installed at the plant.  Anything else is just pure dealership BS.

Freight is a legitimate standard charge from H-D itself, and is listed on the H-D spec page.  It's currently $435, regardless of where you live.  The extra for "prep" is one hell of a charge for a wash job.  Pay it if you want, but it's really just extra dealer profit on top of the 20% he already gets at MSRP.

X2 on prep being BS.  Just a way for a dealer to disguise they are charging over MSRP.

If labor is $100/hr, and a dealer charges $1000 for prep, that means it takes 10 hrs to get a bike ready for the showroom floor.  As a buddy of mine would say, "that doesn't pass the smell test."
