07 SE model Torque spec differences?
« on: December 23, 2006, 11:23:31 AM »

What is different with the 07 RK and Ultra SE models that gives them 115ft-lbs as compared to 105ft-lbs on the Dyna and Softtail? [smiley=confused5.gif]

Don't know why the Dyna would be different but the softail is a "b" motor so that makes sense it would be different. Keep in mind all HD specs are at the crank, not the rear wheel where it matters.

And why is it rated at the same 115 ft-# as the '07SERK which has the SE A/C when the CUSE does not? [smiley=confused5.gif] Never found their numbers very believable for stock ratings. And who's gonna check them at the crank? Nobody. ::) The only numbers they publish that might come close are the SE Dyno runs, since they're at the rear wheel and can be easily verified for comparison. ;) Hoist!  8-)

Mobile,

That difference has always been there, not just on '07's.  Since the Dyna and FLH series use the same "A" motor, the only obvious difference is the exhaust system (Shorty Duals versus the touring exhaust).  I doubt that the exhaust alone would make a 10 lb-ft difference, but combined with different timing/tuning in the stock ECM's, it does seem feasible.

From other HD documentation, several HP are lost with the balancer configuration in the B motors.  That would explain the variance in the Softail, anyway.

I was guessing that they detuned the softail motor because the drive belt is thinner and they didn't want to put undue stress on it.

DHT,

Actually, that new narrower belt is more than strong enough.  The real reason the "B" motors are slightly detuned is the balancers; that's also why the redline is lower.  Harley was being cautious on their first attempt at balancers, I guess.  I had a 500 Yamaha twin back in the mid seventies that had balancers and a 10k redline, but of course they used gear drive versus H-D's chain drive.

Any balanced engine will sap some power from the accelerating/decelerating masses in the balancing system, I don't think they necessarily need to detune the engine with the ECM to accomodate the balancers.

They do tune the "B" motor down because of the balancers. They also redline lower than the "A" motors.

I read in one of the articles on this issue is the difference is the exhaust. The 07 SERK has 2 big 4" mufflers that are very efficient.
