Options to ship the bike to sturgis
« on: October 27, 2014, 07:51:41 PM »

So my buddies and I are thinking about attending sturgis next year but living in VA and having only one week for the event we are thinking about having the bikes shipped over there are flying over to spend the whole week enjoying the activities.

I was wondering if anyone had attempted to ship their bike and if so any info about options and cost.

Thank you in advance for any guidance.

I shipped twice, in '06 and then in '10.  Once was from NJ and once from Mass.  Both times the cost was about $850.  I used Keyboard Carriage. Talk to Kelly Cecile, her number is 270-737-5797.  Both times the bike was in perfect condition.  It was great going.  Flew down and met at a truck stop outside of Sturgis.  About a 50mile ride in.  Only downside is that it takes about a week to get the bike back.

Last year I was staying at a hotel in Rapid City where Keyboard was unloading their 18 wheelers.  The owner was there and gave me the nickel tour of how they secure and transport the bikes.  Each bike has its own skid and is strapped down (using padded straps as I recall).  The only thing they have to do to your bike is to remove the windshield, which they will allow you to do if you choose.

They seemed very meticulous regarding the care of the bikes.  The only way I could see a bike being damaged is if the truck turned over.  Also, both the owner and his daughter were riding CVOs.

Ever watch how HD ships their bikes to the dealers? Same way. Each is on its own metal skid with wheel locks. Then the bike is strapped to the skid. Pretty ingenious and almost perfect. I would ship with a guy using that method for sure.

I'm not sure who does it....but when I picked my wife up at Rapid City airport, there was a roped off area in the long term parking that had a 5 or 6 haulers there and people were picking up their bikes.  Seemed very slick...fly to Rapid City walk out to the parking lot and get your bike....I assume that when you leave you just drop it off there and walk over to the terminal.

Nice small regional airport.

Sorry I can't tell you the haulers name,

I am also going to Sturgis next year but we are riding. I intend to do Datoyna also and read an article about the Autotrain which leaves near washington DC and arrives approximately 30 miles from Daytona 17 hours later. You and your bike arrive at the same time...both of you fully rested. I do not know why the Autotrain cannot provide the same service to Sturgis and back once a year. I think it would be used by a lot of riders.

Keyboard Carriage is the best. Your bike is taken care of and the price is reasonable.
Many members on this site use Keyboard.

Why not take the extra time to ride across and back?

Because he only has a week. I'd rather be riding the black hills than super slab if I only had a week.

True. I'd also rather be drinking a slab.

Thank you everyone for the info. Sounds like Keyboard Carriage is the way to go. I'll reach out to them.
