Oil filters
« on: November 01, 2014, 06:34:44 PM »

Can you buy an oil filter for the HD bikes at say autozone, oreilly's or walmart stores. I know they sell the K&N filters at these places. Just curious if any have done it..

I haven't found a filter to fit a twin cam at an auto parts store but Fram brand name makes a filter that fits EVO engines, part # 3600 at Wal-Mart.

Yep a K & N, part # KN-171C for a chrome one. For a black one I think it is KN-171B.

Yes, kn-171c is on the shelf at our local O'Reilly's. About 3 bucks less than the stealership.

Good deal on filters.

On other question what do u use to catch the oil that spills out after pulling the oil filter off. It usually gets all over everything under the filter. I know HD makes a drain pan.

Aluminum foil.  There's really nothing that works well.  I object to paying HD $20 for a plastic tray.

I just take a plastick bag and feed it up under the filter, and then remove the filter right into the bag  :2vrolijk_21: never makes a mess anywhere  :2vrolijk_21:

I use these oil absorbent pads we have at work. Slide it under the oil filter prior to loosening it and the pad will then soak up any oil that comes out of the filter during removal. They work great! no oily mess all over the bike or the lift/floor  :2vrolijk_21:

I would probably stick with the Harley filters (5 micron) and not go to aftermarket or car oil filters.  Its my understanding that K&N is not as good as than 5 micron H.D. filtration.  Just easier to remove......Buy OEM from online sellers offering 20% off MSRP....I just as soon buy everything from my selling dealer if he has earned the privilege of your patronage.  I have had issues on bikes where the dealer "threw it my way" or gave me leeway on a warranty item and part of that was earned thru buying my bikes, ESP, parts and miscellaneous from the same dealer for 12 years....This is just my personal opinion....your bike your call.
