Heads UP
« on: November 12, 2014, 04:12:59 PM »

Just a heads up Got a flat as I was getting back to the house Yesterday.
Pulled wheel today to get new tire. Up under the bike looking and cleaning
Lo and behold the 2 Bolts that hold the cross over pipe to the trans. are gone.
The impression in the tire looks to be the head of the bolt along with a nice size hole
can't say for sure any way call the Harley Shop to check on the bolts Guess What they are
Back ordered I wonder why and How many folks are riding around with no bolts in the cross over you all might want to take a look.  Just Venting They all do that

Others have reported the same thing in the not-to-distant past, so you aren't alone.  Btw, I seriously doubt those bolts are some special Harley exclusive design.  Tell the dumb azzes at the dealership to get a couple bolts of the correct size at the hardware store and install them until they can get those exclusive (and overpriced) official H-D versions.  You wouldn't think a customer would have to tell them this, it's just a friggin' bolt for Pete's sake.   Tell them you'd like a nice stainless version for corrosion resistance, in case getting the official one takes a long time.

Who installed the Fullsac? If it was the dealer they owe you a tire.

 Loctite is our friend.

I installed my Fullsac myself and lost the bolt also, completely my fault. But as Jerry suggested I stopped in the local hardware and picked up a stainless replacement which will stay there.

i've only got one bolt holding my crossover, unless you consider the bolt that is holding the bracket on as well.  if you are, then the bracket would be gone too.

but, the bolt holding the crossover to the bracket is a 5/16-18 x 1/2 if you want to just go get your own.

14CVOultra, don't trust anyone with the torque on your nuts and bolts. Always check it yourself. Especially the ones that can lose fluid. A friend of mine had a service at a local Indy shop ( I don't go there), as he is going down the rode he almost wrecks because his trans fluid bolt fell out and all his trans fluid went everywhere. When he confronted the owner the reply was "What do you want me to do about it? ) I can also say that I let the local dealer do my 1 K service. When the next service was due I did it myself and believe me if the bolts for the trans, primary, and engine oil could have been any looser they would have only been finger tight. If there is something I cannot do I definitely check the torque on any related fasteners when I get the bike home.CAHDBIKER

Isn't the OP talking about the two head pipe support bolts that penetrate the side case.  Mine on my 2011 were loose but I noticed it because of oil blowing up on head pipe and making quite a mess plus burning oil smoke.  They are hard to get to with the head pipe on.  Mine did not seem to be getting oil on the tire but was on head pipe and would drip a few drops every time I parked.

Just for the record both bolts were factory bolts torqued to the  spec in the manual and Blue loctite when i installed the FullSAC x pipe. I did have a couple replacement bolts in the Hardware bin installed with Blue loctite and lock washers this time will see what happens.
The bolts I am speaking of are the 2 that attach to the very top of bracket for the cross over
pipe they attach to the back of the trans.

I discovered mine missing recently as well.  Fortunately they didn't puncture my rear tire.

I think the missing crossover bracket bolts may have been a contributing factor in my two transmission bearing plate bolts coming loose that secure the exhaust hangar.

I'm added them to my walk around inspection.

If the blue don't hold then red. I've not had any trouble taking apart bolts/nuts when using red loctite.

Where applicable anytime I do a service or repair I clean the bolt and the bolt hole with contact cleaner and then high pressure air to make sure it's oil free and dry before putting on Loctite.

Exactly!  It's not unlike using any other kind of adhesive to secure a part, you need to start with properly prepared and clean surfaces if you expect good results.  The thread locker companies all recommend their own brand of cleaners, but you can use contact cleaner or other solvents that don't leave a residue.

Indeed. I also don't trust the pre-applied patch that comes on some hardware with new parts. When you thread the bolt the pre-applied turns to powder and is not effective.
