Gasket thickness
« on: November 15, 2014, 09:20:48 AM »

As not to hi-jack a previous post, what is the headgasket thickness in a 2013 110. I have seen references from .040 to .065 on this site. Dealer can't / won't tell me.

Tell the jerk you want to buy one, and when he brings it to you take the micrometer or vernier caliper you just happen to have in your pocket and measure it.  Then either buy it if you want it (they run about ten bucks apiece unless H-D has jacked the price lately), or hand it back to him and tell him you changed your mind.

As best I can tell H-D has gone through four versions, up to 16801-07C, and now even that part number shows as obsolete.  I would think you don't necessarily want to know what someone who used one of those four obsolete versions measured, but rather the actual thickness of the gasket that's available now.  :nixweiss:

I'm going to guess your dealer doesn't have a clue how thick a head gasket is...  In fact you'd be shooting above average if you found a dealer that even knows what a head gasket is...   :nervous:    :huepfenlol2: :huepfenlol2:

Harley targets their composite head gaskets to be .050" compressed. Measuring a new uninstalled one really doesn't tell you much except pre-installation thickness.

Our local dealer won't pay the good help properly, so now they have a whole new crop of youngsters at the parts counter/phone line.
That puts a whole new meaning to the word frustration......... :(

Check out Cometic or Cyco, for a gasket kit.

I think that's universal to most dealerships.  Either it's a part time retired guy who knows his stuff, but doesn't need a living wage salary, or it's a constant turnover of know-nothing kids with an attitude...   :nixweiss:

Either that, or in many places I've been in over the years it's the dealer's deadbeat kids or his wife's drunken brother that wind up in parts and service.  You see the same thing in some other business's of course, but I've never seen it as bad as I have in H-D dealerships.  I guess when you don't have to be good to make a  ton of money, you can get away with a lot more incompetence in your staff.

I don't know or trust one of the people at the dealer to know how or even under stand how a micrometer or caliper works or let alone read it.

Surprised they didn't tell you your motor doesn't need them.  Lol.

I could see some of the mental cases at the local parts counter trying to measure  a exhaust gasket.

Do yourself a favor. Get Cometic  .030" head gasket. Make sure
It will fit. With heads off check front and rear deck height. If motor is stock the valves should not hit pistons. To be sure you could clay the pistons then measure the thickness and do the math
