Inner Cam Bearing Spun, Time For a 120r ??
« on: November 19, 2014, 08:09:37 PM »

Hello Tec guys..After 55,000 miles and regular scheduled maintenance, the 110 spun a inner cam bearing damaging the case. We built the engine at 20k, pistons, cams, throttle body, heads ect.     Today I have a quote to rebuild the old engine with a new case for @$6,000......Or a new crate 120r with a performance clutch, using the new compensator we just put in and re build the transmission, new oil cooler, and a large oil pan for $10,000.  Question ???  will the 120r be a dependable touring engine with performance, or should I just go back with a re-built 110 and start a new build...thanks, Knothead

Can't they save the case by machining the hole and putting a sleeve in there?

I assume that you are having them do all the labor?  I'm about $6500 in my 124".  They should be able to save the case if you wanted.  Have them ship the bottom end out to Darkhorse.  Those guys are awesome and you'd have a bottom end ready to go another 100k miles.

Call John at Darkhorse crank works (920) 726-4990.  They can repair the case.  Tell him I said hello.

With a damaged case most HD shops are going to want to order up a new case.  It can be repaired though .  Minor welding  and rebore the hole. We repaired several last year and the damage really was minor on all of them and not a huge deal.  As well converted a few older small bearing version's to the newer large bearing,.... in your case( no pun  :)  )  that is not an option though.  As most shops with machining equipment can complete that task. I can suggest a few if you need.

A 120R is a nice engine, without knowing what you had in the 110 you may or may not like the power curve of a 120R engine though.

See if they will work with you on a repair for the case and then have  HD bump it to a 113 in the process and you are money saved and more tq down low than a 120R once done .  I would think its going to need a bore and hone anyways right?

Good luck I am sure it will all turn out great.. Bummer though killer riding season this time of year.

S&S Premium lifters with an adjustable pushrod, are the route to go. :2vrolijk_21:

No welding needed with a 6061-T6 shouldered sleeve,(which we manufacture)pressing the shoulder flush into a c/bore, .002" interfence fit, assembled with RC 680 Loctite.
Sorry no dyno chart available to "document" this procedure, so it is probably a falsehood.... :D :D :D :D

The S&S 124 (for about the same $) has a warranty.

Did it have Torrington needle bearings installed or were they the OE plastic caged needles?
