connecting heated gear to battery tender cable on 2015 FLTRUSE
« on: November 19, 2014, 11:05:31 PM »

Does anyone know if the battery tender cable on the 2015 FLTRUSE is fused? and if so, what amperage is the fuse? The heated gear I use is about 10 amps of draw. the owners manual indicates a 5 amp fuse on the battery. When I pulled that fuse, I still had 14 volts at the battery tender cable and a very loud alarm in my ear.

I don't know exactly what fuse is in the BT lead from the battery, but I know there is one. You should not be getting any power if you remove the fuse, so you might be pulling the wrong fuse.

Either way, I bough an adaptor from the flat 12v to the round connector, so that I can use it for my Gerbing liner and it works great. I know the liner draws just under 80w which should be fine with a 10A fuse. So I have to imagine that the BT fuse is at least 10A as I've never had it blow.

The harness that was either dealer or customer installed on older bikes had an inline 7.5 amp fuse.  Now that the new bikes have the battery tender connector included in the wiring harness, I would expect it would have a fuse in the fuse box.  Take a closer look at all the fuses and the list of what each is supposed to be for, either in the Owners Manual or perhaps the fuse box cover.  It has to be fused somehow, and odds are it's still around 7.5 amps.

Oh, btw, if you want to find it by pulling one fuse at a time with a voltmeter hooked up to the connector, go ahead and disable the security system first.  Key fob nearby and ignition on should do the trick.

One more "btw": the new system started in 2014, so if no one has a 2015 Service Manual or Electrical and Diagnostic Manual to find the answer, a 2014 manual for Touring models will suffice.

Thanks everyone. Jerry, thanks for all the tips!

I pulled the fuse identified for the battery and the fuse labeled in the owners manual as P&A (I assumed that meant Power and Accessory points). neither killed the power to the battery tender cable. The other labeling seemed to different. But i will try the tip of leaving the ignition on to disable the alarm.
