New S&S HL2T lifters installed now has more noise? Help
« on: November 21, 2014, 01:05:35 PM »

Hello all
I have an 07 FLHTCUISE 110 that was my late fathers. So when I started to ride it I noticed A tick in the 2-3000 rpm. Did some reading and decided to do some S&S premium lifters with limiters. Had my local shop install them. Gone is the annoying lifter tick.
So now I have my scooter back and around 2400-3400 rpm I now have a loud clicking.
Like tapping a screwdriver on a valve cover. I have asked a few people they have said those 110 rattle its normal!
I have been around engines my whole life 2/4stroke racing diesel and everywhere in between. It darn sure don't sound normal.I'm just not happy with my hog clanging down the road.
Any help you Guy's have would be great.

Does the noise increase with R.P.M.? It's possible that a rocker(s) are contacting the rocker boxes. Just a thought.

I'm a bit confused.  First you say the noise is gone, then right after that you say it's noisy.  Is the noisy you have now the same as before, or worse?  Have you had this current noise since you got the bike back from the shop, or did it start after you had the bike for awhile?  Did the shop install adjustable pushrods when they changed the lifters, or did they pull the rocker covers and remove and then reinstall the stock pushrods?  If this noise is new since the work, then obviously whoever told you it's normal is FOS.

As Jerry said, your description of the problem is a bit confusing, but I will assume your bike came back to you with a loud clicking.

Did your local shop understand the lifters they were installing were HL2T lifters with travel limiters installed in them?  With travel limiters installed, you have half the amount of adjustment travel built into the lifters vs. a standard lifter without travel limiters.  It would be important they were aware of this to be able to adjust the pushrod length properly.

I recently installed those same lifters in my 110 & I'm very pleased with the result. My motor is so much quieter now, I describe it as there are no more rocks in the rocker boxes. It just sounds to me as though they aren't properly adjusted........Like Jerry said, you need to provide more info so that those with knowledge might be able to more accurately try to diagnose your issues.

What he said  :2vrolijk_21:

the lifters with the limiters can be tricky to adjust correctly, especially if you've never done it before. The S&S website has instructions and of course the directions should have been in the package with the lifters.

I installed these over 10k miles ago and am very happy.  Adjustment is quite different so hopefully they knew that.
good luck

Sorry guys for the confusion. It had the B lifters in it when I got it they ticked. Drove me nuts.  So I ordered  the s&s with there adj pushrods. Now I have a different much more pronounced tick it almost sounds like pinging or a marble bouncing  in a pan.
It will only do it under load. Happened from the start of the swap

It may very well be detonation (pinging), and not something mechanical.  What else did they do besides the lifters and pushrods?  Improperly adjusted pushrods will make noise regardless of load, as will defective lifters.  Detonation on the other hand usually occurs under load.  I think I'd check out that possibility first, right after letting the shop know about the problem just in case they didn't adjust the pushrods correctly or the pushrods are contacting the pushrod tubes (not normally the same kind of noise you described,  but something to consider I suppose).

First if the motor is stock or a bolt in cam limiters are not needed. 2nd When you got the S&S pushrods were they in a kit? With adjustables you need larger diameter push rod tubes. Could be the pushrods are rubbing the inside of the tube(s).

I know just enough to get into trouble on cams, lifters, etc.  When would travel limiters be used on lifters?

Who makes larger pushrods tubes? I did the limiters as I live in red bluff ca and we get many days over 110* . So with that in mind and hot start low oil psi issues. Also I read about bleed down issues. I decided the limiters were a good idea.

no other mech changes.  Same cam, same tune, if they are hitting the tubes what sound does that make?
I don't think it's pinging. I'm running a Dynojet PC3 with 812-025 tune. It did not have this kind/level of valve train noise before lifter/PR install

There is no down side to using limiters whether you need them or not, as long as the installer knows that's what is being installed and they are adjusted properly.  Hot start/bleed down issues are a good reason for using limiters, by the way...

I spent a bit of time lurking on the boards trying to get up to date on the 110" and its problems. I have always had an "EVO" 80" FXDWG. so the twin cam was a bit of a mystery to me. You guys have a nice forum here! You guys have a lot of info on lifters here so I decided that they Should be changed.
So I have never heard of larger P/R tubes? who has them? site sponsor?
