left tailpipe is black & right is clean & shiny
« on: November 27, 2014, 03:53:42 AM »

I have a '15 C.V.O. Ultra Limited that had a Vance & Hines X- Pipe with V&H big ovals (I think that's what they are? ) also a Super Tuner and Dyno tuned. .....it runs great but fuel mileage is down  (24-25 mpg) as compared to my old bike '12 C.V.O. Ultra Classic w/ Fullsac DX Pipe w/ 2 1/4 SD Cores, Super Tuner and Dyno tuned got (36-42 mpg) with that set up. The '15 is tut the left tailpipe black the right is all shiny and clean. I said something to the dealership where I had it Dyno and the said they could dial it back but I'd loose some HP and TQ.  Any suggestions on how to cure this?

If they dyno tuned it and you are only getting 25 mpg I would not let them anywhere near it again! My bike gets 35-40 in town and 40-45 on the highway with a canned map, no dyno.

Ummm, not a very good dyno tune.

My 110 with GMR 577 cams, pipes and tuner runs great and will get 46 mpg "without twisting the throttle too much".

I had V&H Xpipe  and VH high output slip ons and had the same problem. Called V&H and they said it was supposed to be that way. I changed to S&S header and it balanced out. My bad mileage was due to a compensator problem. Yours has to be the tune.

YES!  Go back to that poor excuse for a "dyno tuner" and demand your money back, then go find someone who has a clue and get a proper tune.

One more example of a place with a dyno but no fully capable person to use it properly.  This seems to be quite common with Harley dealerships.

That is why I went with Fuel Pack MP3 and map from V&H for my set up: Power Duals Monster Rounds on 2014 CVO RK. Mileage over 40mpg and incredible power and torque. Had to redo dyno twice on another bike and still not happy with results.
Dyno is great if you can find competent dealer. Good luck with that. Even then, I doubt you will get more than 3 hp over map (assuming map is for that exact setup).

The secret is to find a full time professional tuner with a good reputation, and stop trusting the same Harley dealerships that have a hard time doing much more than an oil change.  As I've mentioned many times, anyone can buy a dynamometer from DynoJet, they don't require proof of competence before they'll sell it to the shop.  Plenty of Harley dealers bought them back when times were good and they were trying to make even more money by selling performance work including dyno tuning.  The problem was (and still is) that most dealerships didn't have fully qualified people to do the tuning, and those short classes the DynoJet people offer won't turn someone who doesn't understand proper tuning theory into a fully qualified tuner.  The classes will teach someone how to get the bike on the machine, strap it down, hook everything up, make the actual runs, and print out charts.  I think I've also mentioned at least one time before that a chimpanzee could probably be trained to do those things also, but that doesn't mean the chimp would be a tuner.

Did the dealer kiss you when you left.  Cause they should have.   Lol.

Sorry. I could help myself.  Jerry got to you first.

Take it to a real professional tuner that is good with your equipment.  Or spend even more money and switch over to what he uses.

Todd.

Wonder if you could start a shop by paying the chimp with peanuts.  May try to sell this idea to a few harley dealers could get me a new bike out of it.  Ha ha ha. Thanks Jerry.

Just need to finds some chimps.

There is a thread called "talk me out of these"  I entered an answer describing your question.  It's currently on page 2 of Intake/Exhaust

The black left pipe being darker isn't what I would be concerned about.  It is a shared pipe and a higher % of exhaust is exiting out the right.  The right gets hotter and creates less carbon.  During idle, the left pipe is more prone to reversion compared to right.  Let it idle for some time and check temps on both slip-ons.

That low of mileage per mile is a huge sign you got a poor tune.  That is what I would be concerned about.

That x-pipe is called Power Duals if it's a Vance and Hines. Lots of folks I've talked to have reported that the left muffler gets a little yellow at the outlet and it cleans off easily. They were all told that this is normal and some got the science behind it. There is no way your mileage should be that bad and I'm sure if you got a real tune your mileage would improve greatly and that left pipe would have the minor carbon build up, not all that black crap.
