RC Components
« on: December 07, 2014, 12:29:16 PM »

My first post here, I'm looking for some advice. I have a 2015 FLHTKSE and am installing a complete set, tru dual headers and Gatlin Chrome slipons. Had the Gatlins on a 2014 FLHTK and even with the stock header I loved the sound. My question is, since they claim the stock header has good flow, and I already have a high flow SE air cleaner, do I need to add a tuner. Would letting HD tune it be an option as well. I did have the Fuel Moto mini tuner on my 2013 RG and that worked well/ I kept it when I traded the bike in. I have sent for a map from Fuel Moto but have not decided to use it. Thanks for the help.

If just adding different mufflers to the factory header, then you don't need your bike retuned.  However, if going true duals, then you'll need a different tune, or at least a canned map.  Your  correct on the air filter, it's already a hi-flow, so it doesn't need replacing.  BTW, where did you hear the factory header has good flow?

You asked about letting HD tune the bike...ask around to determine who's the best tuner in your area.  Don't assume it's the guy working at the Harley shop.

Thanks for the answer Mark. I think I saw it mentioned on the Road Glide forum. I think the jest of the conversation was that the bike might run a little rich, and that a re tune may not be necessary. I have located a good tuner in the area and have shot him a message. I agree that HD may not be the best solution.

IMHO every bike should be tuned. Especially with the ever tightening restrictions the EPA keeps imposing. I have tuned bone stock bikes and their owners are amazed how much better they run. I have never seen a factory stock calibration that I would consider rich and by opening up the exhaust and already having a pretty good free flowing air cleaner, its going to run leaner than what many would consider already too lean. Not richer.

Funny you post that because I happen to be in the catalytic recycling business so i do have a little knowledge of them. My question wasn't really whether there was a restrictive flow, that was just what I have seen posted. I've gutted them on my other harleys before. I guess the question should have been other than performance, does it need to be retuned so it doesn't harm the engine, will it run rich or lean without the catalytic. Thanks for your help.

got it, big change w/o the cat, and you are aware.  The ECM cannot adjust for this difference, the bike just won't run "right" (popping, loss of power, mileage, etc) most guys here will suggest a tuner.  The next issue is WHICH tuner to buy and who does the tuning.  Sounds like you are familiar with the Fuel Moto and a stock map so you can try it and see how it runs. The TTS Mastertune is big favorite here, Harley Race Tuner, and many others are also mentioned. I would say that the technician is as (or more) important than the equipment, so if it isn't running like you want it to, find a guy who is competent with the Fuel Moto system or invest in a new product that your guy is familiar with.

If the 110 didn't come with a convertor, does the head pipe have any restriction in it besides the diameter?

No...but every 110 is going to have a cat unless you bought it used and the previous owner changed headers.

Is there any truth to the rumor that the 2015 CVO RGU has the converters in the mufflers. I see HD sells a system that has no cat in the headpipe, just in the mufflers.

I bought a 2013 CVO Breakout new and did not think there was a cat in the head pipe.

Cat is in the head pipe on CVO RGU.

This is what I was talking about. I recall seeing a post that the HD dealer had told someone buying a 2015 CVO RG that he couldn't change the exhaust because the cats were in the muffler.

The catalytic converters on the bikes with separate head pipes, like your Breakout, are in the muffler inlets.  The bikes that have headpipes attached to a common collector, like the 2009 and later Touring models, have their cat located in the collector portion of the headpipe.

The guy was told wrong, which is not uncommon at all when talking to people from a dealership.  The last person I would ask about anything truly important would be a salesman or other employee at the typical Harley dealership.

The 2015 CVO Road Glide comes with this exhaust pipe standard:  66855-10A  EXHAUST PIPE ASSEMBLY catalytic (chrome) | TA       In case you missed it, that is a 2010 part number still being used on a 2015, and it has a catalyst.  The mufflers do not have cats in them.

That exhaust system you posted a link to is NOT the exhaust that comes standard, it's just an accessory part Harley offers in the catalog.  That one doesn't have a cat in the head pipe, and to be legal you have to use the mufflers that come in that kit because that's where the cats are.  Exactly opposite of the stock setup.
