Computer Geek help
« on: December 23, 2014, 06:51:41 PM »

I bought a new HP laptop, 8.1.  Whenever I try to play a video in Facebook or Youtube, the screen goes green and I can't see video.  Audio is fine, but no picture.  Videos played up to several days ago, but not now.  What do I do?

I'm no expert, honest.
I'm running windows 8.1 on my laptop but it's set up to emulate a windows 7 machine if that makes any sense. I had help doing it...

Anyway back to playing video clips - what are you using as a media player - the one that comes with a new in the box window 8 machine is a pain in the A** therefore I just went and downloaded  some third party software - I use Quick Time player but there are others.

For what it's worth I also have issues with windows 8.1's built in(factory) software when it come to viewing and editing STILL photographs, again third party software was the work around - that and Google to figure out what is needed

Best computer error message ever ---- "A Child has escaped due to a window being left open" ---- which very loosely translated meant a process(program) error occurred because of some sort of shutdown process hierarchy...

The irony of that one still makes me laugh.....

Long, long time ago. before everyone carried a smartphone with more computing power than some big monstrous mainframe type gizmo.... :huepfenlol2:

If memory serves, and it might not....
When you were running a program - now called an APP -- and it encountered an error - usually when you tried to close the program,  if a child (a "child" being a sub-process of the program) tried to shut down in the wrong order, that error would show up on the screen....  Some programmer MUCH smarter then me, and with a sense of humor must have written the coding that made that particular error message show up in a little "pop -up" window.

I always just pictured some little kid jumping out an actual window to run off and play...

there are a lot of complaints in regard to windows 8.x and video files.  the general consensus is to use a third party software.  a lot of folks recommend vlc player.  its free.
