Yea, speakers...again
« on: December 28, 2014, 10:41:13 PM »

I have an 08 CVO ultra.  If I upgrade my rear speakers for quality, and my fairing speakers to quality 6.5s will I notice a difference?  I'm not into spending money for no reason, I don't want to drop $2K on a sound system, but I would like the music to sound better.  Volume is fine,  I just want more clarity at volume.  I've never been a stero/sound guy, so please break the technical answers down Barney style.

Thanks!

Why don't you consider putting 6.5's in your lower fairings.
That way the sound stays in front of you and you don't have to use as high of a volume.

Did you have to install a separate amp or crossover for those?

Suggest that you check out  http://www.hogtunes.com/

I upgraded to Hog Tunes with an 8 speaker system and have enjoyed many years of great sound, and didn't "break the bank" doing so.

The owner (Pez) is a great guy to do business with, and their instructions and videos walk you through the simple plug & play installation.

Here's my '08 with Hog Tunes tweeter bar and lower fairing speakers installed.  I also upgraded the front & rear speakers at the same time and installed a second amp inside the fairing.  The upgrade kit from Hog Tunes came complete with everything required for a great sounding 8 speaker setup.

Rock on & ride safe!

I tied into the rear speaker wires under the seat and ran additional speaker wires under the tank to each lower speaker pod.

Yes you will notice a difference with better speakers. I changed out the stock 5.25 inch fairing speakers with a set of Infinity Kappa 62.11i's. They are efficient 2 ohm speakers with excellent clarity. I did install a Rockford Fosgate PBR300x2 amp in the fairing to power them. I'm still using the stock CVO amp under the tourpak to power my rear pod speakers. I changed out the stock ones for J&M 5.25 inch speakers. Again, these are efficient 2 ohm speakers and they sound much better than stock.

I'm not into spending money for no reason, I don't want to drop $2K on a sound system, but I would like the music to sound better.  Volume is fine,  I just want more clarity at volume.  I've never been a stero/sound guy, so please break the technical answers down Barney style.
Cost for these mods was less than $500. I'm happy with my system although I recognize you can certainly go higher end.  I retain all the stock Harley audio controls and have a louder, cleaner sounding system than the stock setup. There is an active Audio forum on HDForums where I picked up suggestions on components and installation instructions.

Thanks!

Don't waste money on speakers.  You'll never get good sound on a bike without breaking the bank and destroying your hearing.

Get those custom made ear plugs with quality headphone speakers in them.

I rode with earbuds for a while; until I didn't hear the fire engine coming across traffic.  Won't make that mistake again.

You are going to notice very little if any difference, at speed, with new speakers. The thing that you will notice is more power (a new or add-on amp). Otherwise just do not waste your money. On a boat or bike you need more power to the speakers to really notice a increase in quality. The wind is not your friend in this situation.

my hearing has reached the point in the last few years that i just ride with the radio off... its sad, i liked tunes.

but its pointless  - drive my pickup with the tunes off and machines .... etc...

noise is just noise now - and i don't like it much. i want quiet, noise gives me a headache.

My suggestion would be biketronics solution. The 7.1 speakers are custom built for Biketronics Hybrid Audio Technology (HAT) speakers. The pro lime are based on the legatia series, the standards based on the Clarus line. Add on a biketronics 2180 amp for 2 speakers or 4 if you don't need fade and they are all 4 ohm speakers. Or if you think you'll add rear and lid speakers in the future go with the 4180 amp. Biketronics has lifetime warranty on their equipment and it's made here in the US.
