Opinions on the Baker DD7
« on: January 02, 2015, 10:53:12 AM »

Softails going in to have the S&S 124 fitted later this month, i'm looking at Transmissions , basically cos I'm sick of this 5th gear whine... so any input on the Baker DD7 would be helpful .

if is just the whine. why not replace the fifth gear with helical cut gear. I think this an option, you may check with folks n the know.

I'd just attend to the existing gearbox.
We have installed those 7 spds in back of 124"ers.

Call Baker. Ask if the DD7 will hold up to your motor. I asked about the DD6 would not hold up to my S&S V111. They said to get the O.D.

The stock trans needs some attention to stand up to the added power of a 124 to have a decent lifespan if you take advantage of the power from a 124 in my opinion. We are putting a 124 and Baker DD7 in right now for a customer. The Baker unit is super strong and Baker is a great company with excellent products. One of the bonuses of running the DD7 is you get to run their high torque bearing also. I'd recommend their heavy duty throw out bearing also. If you do not opt for the DD7, I'd recommend their Street Door, the Heavy Duty Throwout Bearing and their Attitude Adjuster.

If the Jims Fat 5 overdrive will fit your bike, can handle all the power the 124 can put to it.

What tranny fluid are you running? We use a lot of Bel-Ray and Redline Shockproof and it will do a lot to stop the whining assuming there are no other problems with the transmission. With the Oklahoma heat in the summer, running the Formula + or the Syn 3 makes for a lot of undue noise.

Really?? 5th gear whine?? Never heard it. I've tried to listen for a gear whine (just to get an idea what some folks are complaining about) on all three of my current bikes (OE5, SE6 & Baker7 speeds) and can't hear a thing (other than an occasional clunk while shifting on the 5 speed).

I could see a 5th gear whine bothering me in the cage, but on a Harley???

The DD7 is a great tranny (especially on a loaded bagger) upgrade from the CruiseDrive 6 sp.
