CVO to Non CVO
« on: January 05, 2015, 06:03:53 AM »

I currently have a 2013 CVO Road King and I am thinking of going back to a non CVO. Just wondering how many here have done that and just found they liked the CVO better and came back.

If you are going to ride it and thats it, it would be a great choice. If you start adding the CVO bling.....you gonna lose yo a#@.

I agree, and if the dealer installs at their hourly rate, even worse.

If I did go back it would be a matte black or vivid black road glide where I would add stretched bags and CVO fender maybe lowers but that is all stuff I could pull off and use on the next bike.

Motor wise I am not sure I would do anything. If I did it would be the fuel moto 107 kit in a year or so.

I am not sure if I would miss the 110 motor or not.

If you going that route (blacked out/stealth looking bike) than you probably better off going non-CVO since nothing like that is offered in the CVO lineup. Just remember just like adding to CVO's (as most of us do)... whatever you add/do to it you aren't going to get much on return when you sell it... do what you want to make it your bike, ride it, and when you ready to sell it, get what you can and move on to the next one.

I just went CVO from a 14 Limited. The twin cooled HO103 was a nice motor but the difference with the 110 twin cooled is night and day. If you spent the money on a FM107 you would have a nice powerful motor.

Yeah thats true...invisible at trade-in time is a good way to put it...but the dealer is sure to post all the add-ons on the price sheet for all to see when they go to sell. They are like magicians making all those add-ons disappear at trade-in and then suddenly reappear at sale and all of a sudden have value.

Thanks for all the reply's not sure yet what I am going to do. I think a lot will depend on what the dealer will do.

Not sure if I am just getting the itch to work on something or not. There is absolutely nothing wrong with my CVO. Maybe it is winter boredom !!!!!

Hey cvork,
Lets face it, the only thing to make one go from cvo to non is the price. So looking from the perspective of a harley owner and not a normal person. It makes almost no sense to buy non and purchase add-ons to ones likings comparable to a cvo. Relatively speaking it is like throwing money onto the roadway...sorta like the geico motorcycle rider. Investment wise...yeah I know its NOT the right word to use, but money wise it would be better to take the hit now all at once in the beginning instead of over the course of a couple years. Parts and labor, especially MoCo, only gets more expensive year after year. Also if you are looking to defer the cost of add-on parts, that can be done by taking out a loan for the cvo over a number of years. There is value to having parts and labor installed on your motorcycle via the cvo model, for sure not as much as we would like but there is some value...where as there is almost no return on your dollar with after market parts...MoCo or not.
However, if all you INTEND on doing is to ride it and not enhancing it then an argument can be made for the non cvo, but who we kidding here, we know that ain't ever gonna happen so no use discussing that BS any further.
Now looking at it from a normal persons perspective...he would not buy a harley period. Yeah its true...we are not normal...but we all know that...don't we?
Good Luck with your choice...Choose Wisely.

All great points made above. I have had CVOs and non-CVO at the same time. I love to ride anything but the CVO, besides looking good, has the 110 which makes a big difference! To me that is one main reason to stay with a CVO. As I mentioned you lose money with the add ons but the CVO will hold the value better with the dealer (at least it has for me).  You are usually better off buying more than you want to stay happy!  Either way enjoy your ride and ride safe!

Yeah R&J is right...the only reason I purchased the cvo model was for the 110...the rest is just bling. Although I also enjoy the cruise control when traveling. They should offer the 110 on all models.

Yeh right. :D That would be the death of the CVO line. My reason for CVO was looks and motor. As far as a Harley goes it is the top of the line as is fully evidenced by the super high price.LOL.

I liked your other post stating the only reason to not go CVO is price. As much as we bitch about these overpriced unreliable money pits we love the whole package of looks, style, prestige and power.

If you really want to be "special" get a regular non cvo, take it apart, paint it, add a motor and 20'000.00 dollars worth of chrome goodies and then you will have a bike worth less that the original purchase price at double the cost. At least that seems the be the world of Harley to me.

I have had 4 Road Kings,3 cop bikes and 1 2013 cvo . The CVO was great looking but did not handle on the interstate like the cop bikes.I sold the CVO and bought a 2014 cop bike.I will not be going back to the CVO.
