Cool idea for mic
« on: January 06, 2015, 10:11:40 AM »

Hi All,
I have a 2014 CVO limited. Does anybody know what this highlighted plug is for? As you can see it is not in use. I believe it is for Communications Kit-69200865. My friend installed this kit inside the batwing  of a 2014 Street Glide Special and plugged in his headset/microphone and then ran the mic to the slot on the side of the cell phone door on the dash, when he receives a call he just opens the door and speaks loudly into the mic and it works ok. I talked to him as he was cruising 70 MPH and I could hear him just fine. He says he can also do voice commands and it picks up his voice just fine. My question is will this kit 69200865 work on my CVO limited the kit says it will only fit 2014 Street Glide. But we all know how HD makes mistakes.
Thanks,

It's connector 280 and is used to add headsets to the street glide, which does not come standard with a headset connector. Your CVO already has the headset connectors, rider and passenger. With the kit your talking about it gives the street glide the ability to use a headset intercom to voice control the infotainment system. You already have that ability on your CVO

Thanks for the quick reply Jim. I understand I have those two ports on my bike but I don’t want to use a wired headset. So I  was thinking about adding another mic inside the batwing (without splicing into any harness) and  place the mic by the cell phone door,  and if I receive a call I can just open the door and speak into the mic. Do you think that kit 69200865 would work on my CVO adding a third comm port to the bike. That connector 280 is not being used as you can see in the picture it has the plug protector still connected to it.

A fast answer would be No.

Your friend has to be using a headset or he is using the microphone on his phone. Opening the phone storage compartment and shouting seams to point to this. I don't know how this would work.

I don't think your getting the full story as I see no way he can be voice controlling the infotainment system without a wired connection. Just not possible with the Harley infotainment system

Unless he means that he put the helmet microphone in the storage compartment (not the phone) and he accesses it by opening the compartment door. If this is the case you would have to split the wiring on a helmet headset in order to locate the microphone in the compartment. No easy way to do this without tapping into the helmet microphone wiring. It's hard to believe that the microphone is not picking up lots of road noise in this configuration.

He did put the helmet microphone in the storage compartment from the back side and he accesses it by opening the compartment door. But he ran only the mic portion of the head set (highlighted in green) in the gap that is to the left of the compartment that you would store your phone in. all the rest of the cables (highlighted in red) he bundled up and stored inside the batwing. He did not tap into the helmet microphone wiring.

The heighted spot is where he installed the mic from the inside of the fairing.

This is the part he purchased 69200865
The Highlighted green plugs into connector 280 in the first pic.
The Highlighted red plugs into the  headset, now he has a wired headset correct? Then he ran the mic from the backside of the fairing into the yellow gap on the front door.
Do you think that kit 69200865 would work on my CVO adding a third comm port to the bike. That connector 280 is not being used as you can see in the picture it has the plug protector still connected to it.

First thing you must do is verify that the plug you want to use on your CVO is the same plug that was used on the street glide. It may look the same but not be the same. According to the installation instruction for the kit he used the plug is connector 270, you have to look in your maintenance manual and verify that the plug you want to us is plug 270 it might not be. If it is the same plug and you have verified it with your maintenance manual then the answer to your question would be Yes it should work.

My concern is that the plug you are looking at may not be plug 270 and if it is why would it be unused on your bike when you already have a headset connector.

You can still add just the microphone by tapping into the existing microphone wiring on your bike. I just don't see e microphone working very well in that position. I have never tried it so I don't know for sure it might work well enough.

It would be an interesting project for the winter.

Where did you see in the instruction connector 270? It says 280, did I miss it? I know it works on the SG I talked with mi friend on the phone at 70 MPH and I could hear him just fine. Now I am not saying you would want to have a conference call over this mic but it will work for a quick call and that’s all I want it for anyway.
I think I will have to purchase this cable and give it a try. My friend is rubbing it in my face that it works on his SGS… LOL

My mistake it's 280, typo once and it sticks with you.

Like I said you just need to make sure the connector your looking at on your bike is the same connector as the street glide. That includes checking the wiring to make sure they match.

So... I purchased this cable and installed it like previously stated and it works! Now my CVO limited has a Mic on the dash. Very happy with this simple install. I did not need HD service to enable this port it was already enabled simple plug and play. I also installed the antenna under the faring, figured I do this while I had it apart.

I purchased the kit today. Simple installation. Only thing I did different was drill a hole in the back of the glove box and run the microphone inside. Used a few wire holders to hold it in place. At 70 mph my buddy said he could hear me just fine. Wouldn't want to carry on a long conversation but it works in a pinch.

Very cool. I like that I can now use voice commands. Makes the radio much easier to get around.

This is very interesting. I might have to give this a try. I am amazed that it worked but real cool if it does.
